Over the past 22 years, Ms. Zhong Shujuan was arrested seven times and incarcerated for a total of 12 years for upholding her faith. She suffered horrific torture and deprivation in detention. The persecution has left her daughter mentally ill and her husband's health compromised from the relentless stress and trauma.

The deceased practitioners, 85 of them women, hailed from 25 regions and were between the ages of 39 and 85. Prior to their own tragic deaths, some elderly practitioners had endured the pain of losing their children to the persecution.

The streets were filled with people visiting the 88 Buddhist temples in Kyushu, offering prayers for a prosperous and happy new year. Practitioners took the opportunity to raise awareness of the persecution Falun Gong faces.
Known as the European version of the Magnitsky Act, the “global human rights sanctions regime” established a framework to target human rights violators with a travel ban and freezing of assets.
Besides losing his wife in the persecution in 2008, two prison terms of 11 years destroyed Mr. Li Zhouwen's health. When he was released in 2016, he was incapacitated and couldn’t take care of himself. He passed away in November 2019.
