The event was attended by around 120 Members of Parliament, China experts, reporters, and the general public. Speakers encouraged Canadian officials to speak out on human rights abuses in China, including the persecution of Falun Gong, when engaging in trade and political relationships. In his speech, former ambassador David Mulroney likened messages of concern and support to "a candle in the dark for people who are otherwise alone and abandoned.”
Falun Gong practitioners held demonstrations along President Xi's route to meet with President Trump on Thursday, calling on him to end the 18-year-long persecution in China, and bring the former communist dictator Jiang Zemin to justice for launching the persecution. They also called on President Trump to stress human rights during their meetings.
Eighteen years into the suppression of Falun Gong, many officials in China have come to learn about the persecution and are choosing not to carry out the persecution policy established by the Chinese Communist Party. More and more practitioners have recently been released by judges or had their charges dropped by prosecutors.
The practitioners' peaceful protest was featured in the Palm Beach Daily News and Tampa Bay.
Practitioners held activities to raise awareness of the persecution of Falun Gong in Karlaplan, Stockholm over two weeks in late March and early April 2017.
This report includes the release of six practitioners who were freed after their cases were withdrawn by their procuratorates or dismissed by a court.
