(Minghui.org) A woman in Laixi City, Shandong Province, was released from the Shandong Province Women’s Prison on October 9, 2023, after spending over five years behind bars for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Jiang Shu’e was last arrested on April 28, 2018, and later sentenced to five years. She was admitted to the Shandong Province Women’s Prison in March 2019. Her term was extended by over five months, and she was released in October 2023. She recently recounted her abuse in prison.
Prior to her latest prison sentence, Ms. Jiang was repeatedly targeted for her faith. She was fired from her job at the Laixi City Transportation Group at the end of 1999, months after the persecution of Falun Gong began. She was arrested in 2001 and given two years of forced labor. The authorities forced her husband to divorce her in 2002. She was harassed and arrested multiple times since 2010.
Abused in Prison
Ms. Jiang was admitted to Division 10 of the Shandong Province Women’s Prison in March 2019. As soon as she arrived, she was taken to a stairway and strip-searched. The guards gave her several sets of clothes and shoes before taking her Division 11.
Ms. Jiang was held in a soundproof, dark room with former Falun Gong practitioners assigned to “transform” her. These collaborators had renounced their faith under pressure and joined the guards in intensifying the psychological abuse of the steadfast practitioners. They forced Ms. Jiang to sit on a small stool facing a TV three feet away. Her legs had to touch and her hands had to rest on her thighs. If she squinted, they poked her eyes and verbally abused her. Her vision went downhill and she had trouble seeing.
Ms. Jiang’s buttocks festered and bled after long-term sitting. She was not even allowed to get up at meal times. The former practitioners brought her food in. They did not let her sleep until very late at night and often woke her up as soon as she fell asleep. She had to get up early in the morning and face the sitting torture again.
The collaborators did not let Ms. Jiang brush her teeth, shampoo her hair, take showers, or do laundry. When she asked to use the restroom, they ordered her to write statements to renounce Falun Gong. She refused to comply, so they ordered her to put her fingerprints on their prepared statements. When she refused, they got several criminal inmates to restrain her. Zhou Hongman, who’d been convicted of murder, put her in a chokehold, while others covered her mouth and twisted her arms. Another criminal inmate threatened to kill her if she didn’t give her fingerprints.
Ms. Jiang held firm to her faith, so the guards instructed three criminal inmates, including Zhang Yaoyun, Wei Wucui, and Tang Weiwei, to torture her every night. They forced her to kneel on the floor and held her head against a box. One of them stomped on her legs while another one twisted her arms behind her back all the way up to her head, causing excruciating pain. Then they stabbed her fingertips with the tip of a pen before putting the pen in her hand. The skin on her fingers broke. One person then grabbed her hand to write messages defaming Falun Gong. She yelled “Falun Dafa is good,” and they stuffed her mouth with a rag used to clean the bathroom floor.
The three inmates tortured Ms. Jiang like that for several days. Her arms were severely injured and were not fully recovered even a year later. They also forced her to eat and drink more than needed but refused to let her use the restroom.
In 2020, a guard defamed Falun Gong when he talked with Ms. Jiang. She condemned the regime for persecuting law-abiding citizens like her and said her mother died of stress after her arrest.
The guard put Ms. Jiang in the dark room that night. Another guard named Mu Qiongbo instructed former practitioners Song Chunmei, Cui Lili, and Li Jianmei, as well as criminal inmate Du Lusha to torture her. They forced her to sit on one third of a small stool and watch videos slandering Falun Gong.
Du beat Ms. Jiang frequently and said that the guards told her not to worry even if she beat Ms. Jiang to death.
Following instructions from guards Mu and Xu Yumei, Song pinched Ms. Jiang’s legs, twisted her ears, kicked her on the shins, stomped on her toes, and hit her on the chest with a TV remote. Song also slapped Ms. Jiang in the face and knocked out two of her incisors. She had ringing in her left ear that lasted over a year.
Guard Mu had multiple inmates fabricate evidence against Ms. Jiang and cover up for Song so she could still use Song to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. Mu claimed that Song did not beat Ms. Jiang and that she lost her teeth because of inflammation and chewing on hard food.
Ms. Jiang asked to see the surveillance videos, but guard Sun Li would not allow it. Guard Mu seized her law books and notebooks.
Instead of punishing the collaborators and inmates for abusing Ms. Jiang, the guards put her in solitary confinement, deducted her points, and intimidated and verbally abused her.
Ms. Jiang was not the only practitioner being abused. An inmate once slapped an elderly practitioner in the face in front of other inmates. When someone reported the incident to guard Xu, Xu “investigated” but never disciplined the perpetrator.
Ms. Jiang filed multiple complaints against guard Mu with the prison administration. She also tried to mail her complaints to the Shandong Province Prison Administration Bureau, but the guards stopped her.
