A 30-year-old former host of the Sichuan People’s Radio Station was beaten to death on December 2, 2022, while serving a five-year term in Jiazhou Prison, Sichuan Province, for his faith in Falun Gong. Mr. Pang Xun’s devastated mother is working hard to seek justice for him.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Mr. Pang Xun was covered with bruises when he died.

According to an insider, Mr. Pang’s body was covered with bruises from the beating, as well as marks from electric shocks and being tied up tightly with ropes. He had also become incontinent due to the torture.

The prison denied having tortured Mr. Pang, but claimed that he died of hyperthyroidism, even when he was perfectly healthy and didn’t have any pre-existing conditions when he was arrested. 

One of his friends, with the name “Douban Goose Group Daily,” posted Mr. Pang’s death on Twitter, which has since been retweeted 750 times and garnered one million views.

The friend said, “In late December, my friend was beaten to death in the Communist Party’s prison. His name is Pang Xun, 30 years old. He was a very bright and handsome young man. He graduated from the Communication University of China and used to be the host of Sichuan Radio Station. He was the purest and kindest person I knew. The reason for his arrest was that he (and his family) practiced Falun Gong. Although I don’t practice Falun Gong, this is by no means a reason for the Chinese Communist Party to kill him!”

Arrest and Sentencing

On Sunday morning July 26, 2020, while Mr. Pang was at his home in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, someone knocked on his door. Suspecting it might be the police, he ignored the knocking. Shortly after, his manager at work called him, asking him where he was and ordering him to immediately come to his office. 

Mr. Pang realized that he was being targeted and he found an excuse not to go to his office. Then someone knocked on his door again, claiming to be his downstairs neighbor and there was water leaking into his home from Mr. Pang’s apartment. Mr. Pang still refused to open the door. 

Then the power at Mr. Pang’s apartment was cut off. He also heard people walking and talking in the hallway.

On Monday, Mr. Pang left home to go to work, only to be arrested by the police on the lookout for him. 

The day before, another Falun Gong practitioner, Ms. Wang Youping, an employee of the Chengdu Municipal Bureau of Ethnic and Religious Affairs, in her 50s, was arrested. According to people familiar with their cases, Mr. Pang and Ms. Wang were distributing informational materials about Falun Gong together, without knowing that they were being monitored by the police. 

Mr. Pang was later sentenced to five years in Jiazhou Prison, where he was beaten to death. It’s not clear whether Ms. Wang was sentenced.

Jiazhou Prison

Jiazhou Prison, located in Leshan City in Sichuan Province, is one of the prisons designated to hold and persecute male Falun Gong practitioners in the area. Previously a forced labor farm, it merged with Leshan Shawan Prison to become today’s Jiazhou Prison, with a sign hanging at the entrance which reads, “Chenma Group Co. Ltd.”

Falun Gong practitioners detained there are subjected to torture and brainwashing for upholding their faith. The guards also force the practitioners and other inmates to work long hours without pay. Most of the income from their labor is pocketed by the guards themselves.

The guards force all the inmates and Falun Gong practitioners to memorize the prison rules by the sixth day after being admitted to the prison. Those who haven’t memorize the rules are punished. 

In addition to Mr. Pang, several other Falun Gong practitioners were also tortured to death in this prison in recent years, including Mr. Luo Xuefang and Mr. Sun Renzhi.
