Minghui.org recently confirmed the death of a Jiansanjiang, Heilongjiang Province, resident on July 30, 2023, after she endured decades of persecution for practicing Falun Gong. She was 60.

Ms. Han Shujuan worked for the brick factory associated with the Qixing Farm. After she and her husband, Mr. Shi Mengchang, took up Falun Gong in May 1996, they stopped fighting with each other and their family became harmonious. After witnessing their changes, more than 30 members of their families also began to practice Falun Gong, including Ms. Han’s father, Mr. Han Zhenkui, father-in-law Mr. Shi Dianli, her mother-in-law Ms. Wang Qingrong, sister-in-law Ms. Shi Xiuying and brother-in-law Mr. Shi Mengwen.

The road outside the brick factory was severely damaged. It was extremely hard to pass on rainy days. Unable to get help from the government, Ms. Han and several local practitioners repaired the road themselves. Touched by their efforts, some local residents also joined them.

After the Chinese communist regime ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Han and her husband were arrested and detained multiple times. Ms. Han was detained at a brainwashing center for 183 days. She also served a three-year labor camp term and was sentenced once. Mr. Shi served two labor camp terms for a total of five years, a prison term of two years and a half, and was detained in various facilities for another ten months. Their son, Mr. Shi Qilei, had to quit high school at the age of 16 and began to work to support himself.

In addition to the couple, Mr. Shi’s brother, Mr. Shi Mengwen, was given a two-year labor camp term in November 2000 and sentenced to five and a half years in 2008 and three years in 2014. When he was detained, his ten-year-old daughter lived on her own and often had only instant noodles to eat, as her mother was working out of town. The girl’s grandmother, in her 70s, had to travel between three places to take care of her husband, grandson and granddaughter.

The Shi brothers’ sister, Ms. Shi Xiuying, had her home ransacked multiple times. She developed stomach cancer while she was held at the Qinglongshan Brainwashing Center in October 2010. She was released in critical condition and had to have a gastrectomy to remove three quarters of her stomach.

Devastated by the repeated persecution of the extended family, Ms. Han’s father passed away in January 2012, her father-in-law died in 2015 and her mother-in-law passed away in January 2023, six months before Ms. Han died.

Ms. Han’s Persecution

Ms. Han went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong with her son, then 13, on December 26, 1999. Both of them were arrested and taken back to their hometown. Mr. Shi was held at a brainwashing center for five days. Ms. Han was detained at the Qixing Lockup for over 70 days and extorted 10,000 yuan.

Ms. Han returned to Beijing to appeal again in January 2001. For the next few days, over 30 practitioners from Jiansanjiang also went to Beijing to appeal. The authorities arrested them all, took them back and held them at a brainwashing center for nearly a month. The were not released temporarily even during the Chinese New Year on January 24, 2001.

Ms. Han held a hunger strike to protest the persecution and was released five days later. Yet the police arranged officers to stay at her home to monitor her. They took her back into custody a day later and held her at the Xigemu Forced Labor in Jiamusi City for three years.

Ms. Han was arrested again on January 10, 2010. The police chief, Di Changkun, beat and insulted her. They carried her into the police car, leaving her incapacitated father in his 70s at home alone. She was released after over 40 days of detention.

Ms. Han and her husband were arrested again on April 19, 2010. Mr. Shi was later taken to the Wuchang City Brainwashing Center and Ms. Han was released on the same evening, due to the strong protest from her family.

The couple were arrested another time in late September 2013 and taken to the Qinglongshan Brainwashing Center. Ms. Han was forced to give up Falun Gong and then released. She suffered a certain degree of nervous breakdown after returning home. Mr. Shi was detained there for 186 days and subjected to brutal torture for not renouncing Falun Gong.

On March 21, 2014, four prominent human rights lawyers and seven Falun Gong practitioners were arrested on March 21, 2014 for seeking the release of Falun Gong practitioners detained in the Qinglongshan Brainwashing Center. Though the lawyers and three of the practitioners were later released, four practitioners, including Mr. Shi’s younger brother Mr. Shi Mengwen, remain detained and were later sentenced to prison.

Due to the family’s persistent efforts to expose the persecution, a group of officers broke into Mr. Shi Qilei’s computer store on March 13, 2015. They searched the place and confiscated four laptops, two desktops, ten cell phones, seven flash drives and 16 cell phone memory cards. Mr. Shi Mengchang and Ms. Han rushed over to check the situation, only to be taken to the police station together with their son. With their strong protest, the couple were released four hours later and their son returned home around midnight.

Mr. Shi Mengchang’s coat was torn off by the police during the arrest

Mr. Shi Mengchang, Ms. Han and their son were arrested again on December 24, 2015. Mr. Shi Qilei was detained for more than two months. Mr. Shi Mengchang was later sentenced to 2.5 years and fined 20,000 yuan. Ms. Han was given two years with four years probation and was fined 10,000 yuan.

Unable to cope after years of persecution, and still mourning the loss of her loved ones, Ms. Han died on July 30, 2023.
