(Minghui.org) A former middle school physical education teacher and accountant was sentenced to 1.5 years on May 24, 2022 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Mr. Zhang Jun, of Dalian City, Liaoning Province, was arrested on July 15, 2021 and put on criminal detention at the Jinzhou City Detention Center. His latest arrest came months after a previous harassment in November 2020, as the authorities attempted to force him to renounce Falun Gong in the nationwide “Zero-out” campaign (a concerted effort targeting every Falun Gong practitioner on the government’s blacklist in China to give up their faith).

The prosecutor twice returned Mr. Zhang’s case to the police for insufficient evidence, but the police still managed to press the prosecutor to indict Mr. Zhang. He stood trial at the Pulandian District Court on May 7, 2022 through a video conference. Lawyers Dong Qianyong and Chen Zhiyong entered not guilty pleas for him.

The judge sentenced Mr. Zhang to 1.5 years with an 8,000-yuan fine on May 24. He has appealed with the Dalian City Intermediate Court and is now awaiting the result.

Prior to his latest sentencing, Mr. Zhang was given a three-year labor camp term in 2000 for going to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. He was subjected to brutal torture and removed from the accountant position at his school after he was released. His wife, Ms. Miao Yuhuan, who worked at the same school, was also harassed for her shared faith in Falun Gong over the years.
