(Minghui.org) A 73-year-old retired police supervisor in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province has been seeking exoneration, since she completed a one-year prison sentence in November 2021 for her faith in Falun Gong. Ms. Cheng Lan’s request was repeatedly rejected at the municipal and provincial levels. She is currently waiting to hear back from the Supreme People’s Court and Supreme People’s Procuratorate in China.

Ms. Cheng first filed a motion with the Nanjing City Intermediate Court to reconsider her case and clear her wrongful conviction on March 13, 2022. She also copied her motion to the Qixia District Police Department, the Xuanwu District Procuratorate, and the Xuanwu District Court, which were responsible for her arrest, indictment, and sentencing. She reiterated that she broke no law in practicing her faith and should never have been jailed or had her pension suspended, simply for exercising her constitutional right to freedom of belief.

The Nanjing City Intermediate Court rejected Ms. Cheng’s motion on June 28, 2022. She turned to the Jiangsu Province Superior Court, which ruled against her on July 18, 2023. She then petitioned the Supreme People’s Court on August 1, 2023. That same day, she also filed a motion with the Nanjing City Intermediate Procuratorate.

Ms. Cheng received a ruling from the Nanjing City Intermediate Procuratorate on November 17, 2023, stating that her case was dismissed because she failed to “establish grounds for the motion.” She escalated the motion with the Jiangsu Province Superior Procuratorate on January 3, 2024. The agency sent her a text message the next day acknowledging the receipt of her motion. Another text message came on April 7, 2024, notifying her that the case was being processed. Two more similar text updates followed, before a written ruling was delivered to her on January 7, 2025, stating that her case was dismissed because of the “lack of grounds.”

Ms. Cheng filed the same motion with the Supreme People’s Procuratorate on February 24, 2025. She is still waiting to hear back from the highest Procuratorate in China. The highest court, to which she submitted her petition on August 1, 2023, has not responded to her.
