(Minghui.org) Minghui.org previously reported on the torture of an 81-year-old retired textile worker while she was serving a 15-month prison term for her faith in Falun Gong. This article provides additional information on what she was subjected to in prison.
Ms. Wang Guixia of Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province, was arrested on September 25, 2022, and later released on bail. She was taken back into custody on February 1, 2024, and issued a formal arrest warrant four days later. Her case was submitted to the Linghai City Procuratorate on February 19, 2024, and she was indicted the next day. The Linghai City Court held a hearing in the Jinzhou City Women’s Detention Center on March 4, and she was sentenced to 15 months weeks later.
Ms. Wang was admitted to the Liaoning Province First Women’s Prison on July 17, 2024 and assigned to Division 12 the next day. That division was specifically designed to torture Falun Gong practitioners and no abuse was deemed excessive.
Abused in Division 12
On July 18, 2024, Ms. Wang was put in a solitary cell with inmates Zhang Hanwen (the most active and brutal abuser), Fan Lili, and Xu Liyan, who took turns monitoring her. They forced her to sit on a small plastic stool from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. She suffered back pain and severe swelling on her legs and feet. Her ankles were the size of her calves at one point.
During the sitting torture, Ms. Wang was also beaten. At noon on July 18, 2024, inmates Zhang and Xu grabbed her shirt and rocked her back and forth, slamming her head against the metal bed frame. An egg-sized lump did not subside until many days later.
Ms. Wang yelled for help, but no guard showed up to stop the inmates. They taunted her, “No one cares if you die. The prison has two death quotas every year. We broke no law torturing you!”
The guards later accused Ms. Wang of “disrupting prison order” by yelling for help.
For three days in a row, the three inmates did not let Ms. Wang drink, eat, or use the restroom. They only gave her five minutes to brush her teeth and wash. There was no mattress and she had to sleep on a hard bed board with only one thin comforter. She was not given a pillow.
A few more inmates were later added to the group monitoring Ms. Wang every day. They forced her to watch, read, and listen to materials smearing Falun Gong. They also ordered her to write various statements to renounce and denounce Falun Gong. After three days, Ms. Wang, already in her 80s, could no longer cope and wrote the renouncing statements against her will. A few other practitioners did the same after relentless torture. One of them was forced to soil her pants.
After Ms. Wang wrote the statements, she was forced to write thought reports every day. The reports had to defame Falun Gong and its founder, as well as sing the praises of the communist regime.
The guards also attempted to ascertain how well Ms. Wang had “transformed” by videotaping her answering the following questions:
- Name, gender, age, place of origin, and other personal information.- What have you learned since you’ve been admitted to prison?- Who has been the nicest to you here?- What are your thoughts on prison management?- What have you learned from the training provided by the team captain?- What are your plans after you are released?- What do you most want to do after you are released?- Will you still practice the cult Qigong after your release?- Will you still participate in cult activities after your release?- What would you do if someone asked you to help distribute Falun Gong flyers?- Will you break the law again after you are released?- What kind of person do you want to be after your release?
Ms. Wang refused to comply.
Continued Abuse
Ms. Wang was transferred to Division 11, which was for the elderly and the infirm, on September 18, 2024. She refused to wear the inmates’ badge or face the wall when ordered.
In March 2025, Ms. Wang issued a solemn declaration to nullify the statements she was forced to write in Division 12. She again refused to be videorecorded despite the threats of being stripped of her right to family visits, the purchase of daily necessities, or showers.
When the prison again denied Ms. Wang phone calls with her family in April 2025, she protested, and guard Chen Lin said that she had to agree to be videorecorded. When she again refused, she was denied phone calls with her family.
The guards tried to videotape Ms. Wang again on April 13, 2025, but were not able to. On April 19, they removed the bed from her cell on the grounds that she did the Falun Gong exercises that day. She had no place to sleep or even sit. She ended up sleeping in a big drawer (80 x 40 x 20 centimeters—31 x 16 x 8 inches) for a whole week.
On April 25, 2025, the guards tried at least four times to videorecord Ms. Wang. She refused to cooperate the first time. The second time, the guards had two inmates force her into a wheelchair and take her to an office. Her pulse shot up to 110 beats per minute, and her high blood pressure was too high, so they gave up. The third time, her heart rate jumped to 125, and the guards feared she might suffer a medical emergency, so they wheeled back to her cell. Around 3:30 that afternoon, they tried a fourth time. When two inmates again put her in the wheelchair, she called out “Falun Dafa is good.” It is unclear if the guards were able to videorecord her.
When Ms. Wang was finally released in May 2025, she was emaciated and weak and her legs were severely swollen. Once cheerful and outgoing, she was withdrawn and timid. She also suffered from mental fatigue and struggled to focus.
