A wheelchair-bound woman in Yinchuan City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, died in June 2025, after suffering repeated persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Wang Guoxia, 85, and a retired official at the workers’ union of the Yinchuan Post Office, developed severe depression in her 40s and struggled to fall asleep at night. She also suffered from heart disease, arthritis, cervical spondylosis, and lower back and leg pain. She had a sallow complexion and was thin.
Her condition worsened after her husband died of a heart attack in April 1993 while attending a veterans’ reunion out of town. She could no longer cope and took early retirement in July 1994. A friend introduced her to Falun Gong around August 1997, and she soon regained her health. She had a rosy complexion and put on some weight. She felt joy in life again.
After the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) launched a nationwide campaign against Falun Gong in July 1999, Ms. Wang held firm to her faith and was repeatedly targeted. She was harassed many times and twice arrested. Her health declined due to the relentless persecution. After taking a fall in August 2020, she developed paralysis and became wheelchair bound. The police still harassed her from time to time. She died in August 2025.
Harassed in 2016 for Filing a Complaint Against Former Chinese Dictator
Ms. Wang filed a criminal complaint in early June 2015 against former Chinese dictator Jiang Zemin for launching the persecution of Falun Gong. She mailed out her complaint at the post office located on Minzhu Street and went to check the status days later, on June 18. She was given a notice saying that her complaint had been withheld by the post office. Being a retired post officer official, she knew such an act was illegal.
A few days later, Zou Haijun from the Xingqing District Domestic Security Office led four officers to harass Ms. Wang at home. They questioned her as to why she filed a complaint against Jiang. She replied that Falun Gong restored her health but Jiang persecuted it. Zou then left.
Ms. Wang saw a woman with a large goiter on her neck one day in August 2016 and shared with her the health benefits of Falun Gong. The woman relayed the conversation to her husband, who reported Ms. Wang.
More than a dozen people, including officer Wang Yan from the Jiefangxi Street Police Station, arrested Ms. Wang on the early morning of August 30, 2016, while she was out. They dragged her into a cruiser and took her to the police station.
While she was being interrogated, another group of officers went to her home. They attempted to pry open the door but failed. Officer Wang deceived Ms. Wang into turning in her bag and found her home key to pass to the group of officers at her home.
Ms. Wang’s Falun Gong books and computer were confiscated. She was released that afternoon.
Harassed in 2017 After Being Reported By a Traffic Police Officer
Ms. Wang ran into a traffic police officer on the afternoon of December 14, 2017, and talked to him about Falun Gong. An elderly woman was also present. The officer turned on his body-cam to record the conversation and later reported Ms. Wang.
Ms. Wang went out at noon the next day and returned home a bit past 5 p.m. She used her key to enter her home, only to find about ten people in her living room. She was shocked and asked who they were and how they got in.
A man walked up to her saying, “Don’t you recognize me anymore? This is the second time I have come to your home.” Ms. Wang then remembered he was officer Zou, who had previously harassed her in June 2016.
Zou produced a piece of paper that he claimed was a search warrant. He ordered Ms. Wang to go with them. She refused to comply and five people came to drag her. She sat on the floor, and they attempted to lift her up. She used all her might to not be taken away.
Zou questioned her as to what she said to the traffic police officer and the elderly woman the day before. Another officer used a laptop to audio and video-record her during the interrogation.
Ms. Wang’s son was then summoned to her home. She asked him to seek justice for her in case the persecution caused a relapse of her heart condition.
Most people left after dinner time, but Zou and three others remained at Ms. Wang’s home. They ordered her to sign the interrogation records, and she firmly refused. They then made her son sign on her behalf. The four officers eventually left close to 9 p.m. Ms. Wang found out later that the police had confiscated a portrait of Falun Gong’s founder and a set of over 40 Falun Gong books before she returned home that day.
In addition to the police harassment, Ms. Wang was also harassed by local street committee staff, including Zhang Yan and Ma Yanhong.
Arrested in 2018 and 2019 for Talking to People About Falun Gong
Ms. Wang and another Falun Gong practitioner were arrested on February 11, 2018, after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. The patrol officers who arrested them hurled abusive language at them and took them to the Jiefangxi Street Police Station.
The two practitioners refused to answer questions during interrogation. The police then received an emergency call and stepped out to handle the matter. Ms. Wang and the other practitioner walked out the police station and returned home.
Ms. Wang and a different practitioner were arrested again on March 15, 2019, after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. They were taken to the Jiefangxi Street Police Station for interrogation. Officer Zou also came to question them. They refused to answer questions, and the police summoned their families to sign the interrogation records on their behalf. They were then released.
Harassed Again in 2020 and 2021
Ms. Wang was harassed multiple times during the second half of 2020 when the communist regime launched a zero-out campaign aimed to force all Falun Gong practitioners on their blacklist to renounce their faith. Officer Wang and the street committee workers ordered her to break away from Falun Gong, and she firmly refused to comply.
Ms. Wang’s former workplace also ordered her to renounce her faith and pay the CCP member dues. She refused, and they threatened to suspend her pension. She was not deterred, and they got her family members to sign statements on her behalf.
The relentless persecution took a toll on Ms. Wang’s health. She took a fall around August 2020 and became paralyzed on one side of her body despite hospital treatment. She could no longer take care of herself, and her condition kept worsening.
In 2021, the police and street committee still harassed Ms. Wang, who had been wheelchair bound for over a year. Fearing further persecution, her family and house aide did not allow any Falun Gong practitioner to visit her.
