Mr. Zhang Shiying

Mr. Zhang Shiying of Jilin City, Jilin Province, passed away on May 12, 2013, due to the persecution of Falun Gong. He was 77.

Mr. Zhang took up Falun Gong in 1995. Before he retired, he served as director of the First Cadre Division of the Organization Department of the Jilin Municipal Committee, deputy director of the General Office of the Jilin Municipal Government, and deputy secretary-general of the General Office of the Jilin Municipal Government.

On July 28, 1999, eight days after the persecution officially began, Ning Changqi, the director of Jilin Municipal Government Retired Cadres Department, organized a session with 30 other retired Communist Party officials to criticize Mr. Zhang. Mr. Zhang was under tremendous pressure.

Several newspaper reporters attempted to interview Mr. Zhang and have him publicly denounce Falun Gong. He faced mounting pressure but refused to cooperate with the authorities to slander Falun Gong.

On October 8, 2010, Mr. Zhang was taken to a brainwashing center, where the authorities continued to press him to renounce Falun Gong.

Succumbing to the fear and mental pressure, he died on May 12, 2013.
