Ms. Wang Guanrong of Shuangyashan City, Heilongjiang Province, became blind and lost feeling in her legs and feet from being tortured in Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison. She passed away in April 2009. She was 53.
Ms. Wang went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong on December 18, 2000. She was arrested, detained in Beijing for seven days, and then transferred to the Dagang Detention Center in Tianjin. She was later deceived by the police into revealing her name and address and was escorted back to Shuangyashan. She was held in the Shuangyashan City Detention Center for three months before being released.
Ms. Wang was arrested in October 2001 for printing informational materials about Falun Gong. After she was released following 15 days of detention, she was forced to live away from home. Unable to find her, the police constantly harassed her husband and threatened to arrest him as well. He had to shut down their family-run restaurant, which was doing very well, and go into hiding. Ms. Wang was arrested on December 7, 2002, after she was reported by a taxi driver for talking to people about Falun Gong. She was sentenced to 12 years on September 17, 2003. While being held at the detention center, she was once tortured for 15 hours straight. She was starved, deprived of sleep, beaten, handcuffed, and had her feet stepped on.
After she was transferred to the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison, the guards made her run and squat. The only way they would let her stop was if she renounced Falun Gong. Ms. Wang didn’t give in. The guards beat her, slapped her in the face, and forced her to keep running. Her legs became severely swollen as a result.
On January 7, 2005, Ms. Wang was put in solitary confinement and cuffed to a ring fixed to the floor for trying to stop the guard from playing videos that slandered Falun Gong. Even when the temperature was minus 20°F, the guards never turned on the heat in the room. Ms. Wang was held there for over two months. She became incontinence and had high blood sugar. Her legs were ice cold and she was extremely weak.
After being removed from solitary confinement, she was held in isolation for two more months and forced to sit on a small stool for over 14 hours a day, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Several inmates watched her and read materials defaming Falun Gong to her.
After three years of torture in the prison, Ms. Wang became blind in both eyes and lost feeling in her legs and feet. She was released when she was near death. She died in a local hospital in April 2009.
