(Minghui.org) Ms. Li Shuiqing, who is about 74 years old, lives in Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, was taken to the Nanchang City Women’s Prison on December 21, 2023 to serve a prison term she was initially instructed to serve outside of prison due to her poor health.

Ms. Li Shuiqing

Ms. Li was arrested on July 13, 2020 for practicing Falun Gong, a mind-body spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since July 1999. Several officers from the Lushan District Domestic Security Office broke into her home that day and confiscated her computer, Falun Gong books and informational materials. They took her to a police hospital and released her on bail on August 5, 2020.

Even though Ms. Li was at home on bail, the police kept harassing her and attempted to take her to the police-run hospital again. They threatened to throw her in jail.

The Lianxi District Court in Jiujiang City heard Ms. Li’s case in its subordinate Yongxiu County Court on May 26, 2021 and sentenced her to three years and ten months with a 20,000-yuan fine. The date the sentence would be carried out was not announced. Due to her poor health, she was allowed to go home and serve her sentence.

A few officers from the Lianxi District Domestic Security Office suddenly came to Ms. Li’s home on December 14, 2023 and took her to the Lianxi District Hospital for a physical examination. She was then driven back home.

It is unclear what the health exam result was or whether Ms. Li was deemed fit for detention, but the police returned on December 21 and took her straight to the Nanchang City Women’s Prison.

Past Persecution

Ms. Li is retired, and worked at the Jiujiang Second National Cotton Factory. She used to suffer from various diseases, including tracheitis, asthma, pyelonephritis, allergic ulcerative colitis, high blood pressure, stomach problems, and arthritis. Her feet were constantly swollen, and no medical treatments helped. All her symptoms, however, disappeared after she took up Falun Gong in May 1996.

After the persecution began in 1999, Ms. Li became a target because she upheld her faith. Prior to her latest arrest, she was arrested on August 20, 2009, while she read the Falun Gong teachings with other practitioners. She was held at a local lockup for three months, during which time she was forced to do hard labor without pay and still had to pay 300 yuan every month for her meals. The police also extorted 4,000 yuan from her before she was released.
