(Minghui.org) May 18, 2023, was the day Ms. Wu Bilin, 74, was set to be released after serving five years for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999. Her family, who had not been allowed to visit her even once during her imprisonment, didn’t see her when they went to pick her up.
They later found out that the police had come before them and taken Ms. Wu to a brainwashing center for “further education,” because she still refused to renounce Falun Gong after five years. Her continued detention crushed her 80-year-old husband, who is in frail health.
People from the street committee later went to her home and told her family to pack her summer clothes for them to deliver to her. They said that they saw her at the brainwashing center and that she was still wearing a puffer jacket in May.
Her family, however, has yet to be told in which brainwashing center she is being held.
Ms. Wu is retired from the Wuhan City Materials Bureau Auditing Department in Hubei Province. After she took up Falun Gong, she was able to maintain her integrity and never accepted any gifts or bribes at work, even though many in her position abused their power to amass huge amounts of grey income.
After the persecution began, Ms. Wu was arrested at least 20 times for upholding her faith, resulting in two five-year prison sentences, two forced labor terms totaling four and half years, one month of house arrest, and nine episodes of brainwashing center detentions (including the latest one). She was tortured almost to death three times.
