Mr. Qian Fajun, an art decorator in Linyi City, Shandong Province, passed away on April 17, 2013, after suffering 13 years of persecution for practicing Falun Gong, which has been targeted by the Chinese communist regime since July 1999. While he was incarcerated, he was force-fed, injected with unknown drugs, beaten with spiked clubs, shocked with electric batons, hung up for long periods of time, tied down in unnatural positions, deprived of sleep, and denied toilet use.

Mr. Qian’s first arrest took place in February 2003, which led to months of incarceration at the Shandong Province 2nd Forced Labor Camp. Shortly after his release, he was arrested again in June 2004 and tortured in the Linyi City Brainwashing Center for 11 days. Both times the guards released him because he was on the verge of death and they did not want to shoulder the responsibility.

Mr. Qian’s last arrest took place in September 2011 and he suffered brutal torture in the same brainwashing center and Zhangqiu Forced Labor Camp, where he sustained near-fatal drug injections and force-feeding. He was released four months later in February 2012 and died 14 months later.

Mr. Qian was born in 1969 in Yanma Township, Junan County, Shandong Province. He was hot-tempered before he practiced Falun Gong, but changed after he took up the practice and became kindhearted and more considerate. The following is a summary of his ordeals in the persecution.

Mr. Qian Fajun

1. Shocked with Electric Batons Until Skin Scorched in Wangcun Forced Labor Camp

Mr. Qian left home and became destitute to avoid the persecution in the spring of 2002 after he noticed a police officer following him on a bus. Unfortunately, on the way back home on February 16, 2003, he was arrested and later given two years at the Shandong Province 2nd (Wangcun) Forced Labor Camp.

In June 2003, a guard locked Mr. Qian in solitary confinement and twisted his hands behind his back before cuffing them to the back of the chair he sat on. Four guards each with an electric baton surrounded him, and two of them stomped on his calves, which were immobilized under the chair. After he showed no intention of giving up his faith, they began shocking him at the sensitive areas such as his foot soles, inner thighs, neck, and inside of his elbows.

Mr. Qian said the pain was so intense that it felt like being punctured by multiple metal needles or being bitten by numerous snakes. Two guards had to step on his legs to prevent him from bouncing off the chair.

The smell of burning skin filled the room. After a while, Mr. Qian stopped moaning in pain. The guards stopped to check him and found that he bit his tongue, which had turned purple. The guards pried his mouth open and asked if he would quit Falun Gong. When he remained silent, they launched the second round of electric shocks. The process lasted an entire morning. During the process, he saw two guards standing outside the room watching him being tortured. One kept nodding his head and the other (badge number 3731066) had a smile on his face. When the guards went to lunch, one of the two onlookers stayed to watch him.

The guards moved Mr. Qian to another room, laid him down on a bed plank, and handcuffed him to the bed. A head guard tried to talk him out of his practice, and he replied “Falun Dafa is good.” The guard then accused him of being against the Chinese Communist Party and put him back to solitary confinement.

Because his neck, arms and legs were covered with blisters and burn marks, the guards kept him in solitary confinement for a week until the wounds healed, before sending him back to his cell. This way other practitioners, who were not allowed to talk to one another, would not know about the torture he suffered.

He was released a few months after he was put in the labor camp, as he was on the verge of death due to the torture.

2. Force-fed Nerve Damaging Drugs at Linyi City Brainwashing Center

In about a year after his release, the police arrested Mr. Qian again on June 13, 2004, and detained him. They tried to put him in Wangcun Forced Labor Camp on June 24 but failed because a doctor found him with a serious illness during a health examination. He was taken back to Junan County Detention Center and then released.

On September 23, 2011, Mr. Qian was arrested at home by agents from the Linyi City 610 Office during the busy harvest season. At Linyi Brainwashing Center, the guards tied him down and force-fed him poisonous substances, which left him in a debilitated physical state. They left the feeding tube in him so they did not have to insert it every time they tortured him. They also beat and seriously injured him. As a result, he was unable to walk and needed to be carried around.

Before the force-feeding on the fifth day, the brainwashing center staff members showed him photos of other Falun Gong practitioners being tied to the death bed and force-fed. He still remained undeterred.

The guards later took Mr. Qian to the Lanshan Hospital. Su Wei, the head of the brainwashing center, inappropriately touched Mr. Qian’s private part. A guard tried to insert a feeding tube through his nostril into his stomach but failed. It also took the doctors several attempts to successfully insert the tube. Two doctors even tried to insert the tubes into both of his nostrils. One of them said that she had been force-feeding for over ten years and that she wouldn’t accept any failed attempt because of Mr. Qian.

When Mr. Qian had nasal mucus as a result of the tube insertion, the guards pinched his nose to increase his suffering by claiming to help him clean the discharge. His nostrils were severely injured in the end.

With the feeding tube left in his nostril, the guards took Mr. Qian back to the brainwashing center. They tied his limbs to the four corners of a bed so tightly that he had no range of motion and screamed because of the pain. A female guard said they tied him too tight, but guard Chen Jun said they couldn’t have sympathy towards him.

Torture reenactment: death bed

One time Mr. Qian recounted how Su physically abused him, and Su overheard it. Su forcefully pulled up his arms to cause extreme pain on his shoulders. The guards brought in other practitioners to see the dire situation he was in attempting to intimidate them into giving up Falun Gong.

For the first two days Mr. Qian was tied in the death bed, the guards refused to untie him when he had to use the restroom. By the time they put him down, he had lost the strength to walk and needed to be carried to a restroom. Su kicked him from behind if he moved too slowly. In the following days he was tied to an iron chair during the day, and the death bed at night.

Mr. Qian sneezed and lost the feeding tube ten days later. The next day a guard took him to Lanshan Hospital to insert a feeding tube again. He shouted “Practicing Falun Dafa is not guilty” to everyone he came across. Not wanting people to know about the persecution, the guard rushed him back to the brainwashing center after the tube was inserted and immobilized him on an iron chair to prevent him from pulling off the tube.

The guards physically abused Mr. Qian on a regular basis. When guard Li Yuan force-fed him, she blamed him for bringing trouble to them. When he walked too slowly, a guard would beat him with a metal pole. Even if he just sat with his legs crossed, the guard accused him of doing Falun Gong exercises, tore his pants, and slapped him in the face.

One day he was left on an iron chair overnight outside of Room 6. When Guard Chen Jun came in in the morning and ordered him to move his urinal to the restroom immediately, he told Chen that he’d do it later when he had to use the restroom. This infuriated Chen, who repeatedly slapped him and threw him on the ground. Chen ordered a staff member to turn off the camera in Room 6 and threatened to torture him in the room. Chen also said that there would not be visible trauma after the beating and that Chen could do what he wanted with him.

Chen also said to him, “You are nobody here. You are part of a vulnerable group. We can straighten you out however we want here!”

3. Transferred to Zhangqiu Forced Labor Camp and Injected with Unknown Drugs

Guard Su removed Mr. Qian’s feeding tube on October 28, 2011, cuffed his hands behind his back, and announced in front of other practitioners that they were transferring him to Zhangqiu Forced Labor Camp, implying that they would suffer the same fate if they didn’t renounce Falun Gong.

At a hospital, a doctor examined Mr. Qian and concluded that his health was too poor for the labor camp to admit him. Despite the warning, the guards took Mr. Qian to the labor camp. A guard at the camp locked him up in a storage room.

Mr. Qian went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution, and the camp guards force-fed him. Labor camp doctor Zhang (badge no. 3731063) repeatedly pulled the tube in and out when force-feeding him. The prisoners who witnessed the scene said, “This isn’t force-feeding. He was hitting and punching Qian’s nose with the tube.”

Mr. Qian vomited after every force-feeding. He also tried to pull out the tube, but couldn’t. He convulsed frequently and fell out of his bed from time to time. He sometimes lost control of his bladder and wet his bed.

Finally, prisoners in the same cell realized that he was dying and reported his situation to a captain. The captain responded, “What are you worried about? If he dies, we’ll just throw him outside.” The guards continued to force-feed him.

The forced labor camp officials finally sent him to Basan Hospital for so-called emergency resuscitation. He was injected with an unknown drug on his right foot. His condition deteriorated quickly afterward and he was released in February 2012.

Mr. Qian’s foot festered after he was injected with an unknown drug in Basan Hospital.

Mr. Qian’s health did not recover after he returned home. He was unable to walk and was in great pain. His right foot festered severely and discharged pus due to the injection of unknown drugs at Basan Hospital. Toward the end, he could barely move his limbs. He needed help to eat, drink, or use the restroom. He could not even get out of bed. He passed away at 9:00 p.m. on April 17, 2013, at the age of 44.
