Additional Information about Schoolteacher Beaten to Death Ten Days Before End of Wrongful Prison Term

A schoolteacher in Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province, was beaten to death ten days before he was to be released after serving 5.5 years for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Mr. Pan Xujun 

Mr. Pan Xujun was arrested on May 19, 2015 and sentenced to 5.5 years by the Pei County Court in 2016. According to an insider at the Hongzehu Prison, inmate Li Wenhua was instigated by the guards to torture Mr. Pan. He was only allowed to sleep for two hours every day, as well as being forced to sit on a small stool without moving. If he fell asleep, Li would spray spicy water on him and slap him in the face. Mr. Pan died on November 8, 2020 from a brain injury after being hit by Li on the temple, ten days before his term was about to expire.

When Mr. Pan’s family was summoned to the local mortuary to see his body, the prison claimed that he died of a stroke. His loved ones didn’t accept the explanation and suspected that he was beaten to death for his organs, given the frequent health examinations he was subjected to during his previous term in the same prison. The authorities eventually forced the family to cremate his body and give up seeking justice for him.

The insider revealed that Jiang Ligong, the guard in charge of the prison’s 11th Ward, and Zhang Jianzhong, the secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee branch in the prison, were responsible for giving orders to the inmates, including Li, to tortue Mr. Pan. 

Most of the inmates in the prison knew about the torture death of Mr. Pan, but the authorities forbade them from talking about it. Anyone who tried to speak up would face retaliation from the guards. The local procuratorate also covered up the crime for the prison. 

In addition to Mr. Pan, many other Dafa practitioners also suffered similar torture. Mr. Tang Xueyong wasn’t only tortured physically, but was also forced to watch pornography and engage in masturbation. Other practitioners were tied up and forced to watch or listen to videos slandering Falun Gong.

The prison guards also abused other inmates by forcing them to work overtime without pay.
