US Congressional Commission calls on President Bush to press Jiang Zemin on the issue of human rights

A congressional panel has issued a report criticizing human-rights abuses in China and recommending ways the United States can help China improve its rule of law. The panel also calls on President Bush to press China on the issue of human rights when he meets later this month in Texas with Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

Senator Max Baucus, chairman of the commission, said, "We outlined the slippage that is existing in China, that is the deterioration of human rights protections - the accumulation of abuses in China in the last year or so in lots of different areas. ... We pull no punches."

(Clearwisdom.net) WASHINGTON - A new U.S. watchdog commission Wednesday called for the United States to play an active role in improving human rights in China by speaking out at the highest level and providing much-needed technical assistance.

U.K. Annual Human Rights Report On Falun Gong

The Chinese Constitution entitles people to the right of freedom of religion and belief. But as the report indicates, when attempting to exercise this right of freedom, the Chinese people have encountered great difficulty.

In China, torture and mistreatment remain serious problems that have been reported in police stations, detention centers, prisons and drug rehabilitation centers. Although torture and mistreatment are illegal, in practice many perpetrators acting in an official capacity are excluded from prosecution.
