Ms. Zhang Xiufen, of Changchun City, Jilin Province, went to Weihai City, Shandong Province to visit her son in 1999 and was arrested after the persecution began on July 20 that year. She was detained for two weeks. In April 2000, while on a train in Shandong Province, she was arrested after the railway police spotted her reading Falun Gong teachings. She was taken to Qinhuangdao (another city in Shandong) and held there for one night. The next day police in Changchun City traveled to Shandong and took her back to Jilin Province.

Ms. Zhang went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in July 2001 and was arrested. After a brief detention at Changchun City’s Liaison Office in Beijing, she was escorted back to Changchun and held at the Balipu Lockup for half a month. She was given moldy cornbread to eat and made to sleep on the cold cement floor. She went on a hunger strike for seven days and suffered greatly.

Ms. Zhang made another trip to Beijing in September 2001 and was arrested again. She was taken to the Daxin County Lockup. She refused to reveal her name or address and went on a hunger strike. The police cuffed her hands to a door frame and tortured her with various means. They then moved her to the Daxing County Detention Center. After more than 70 days there, she was escorted back to Changchun and held at a police hospital. The officers who picked her up from Beijing forced her to cover their travel expenses totaling more than 4,000 yuan.

The police hospital found that Ms. Zhang had a health indicator that was abnormal. She also developed scabies while in Beijing, yet the police still gave her one year of forced labor at the Heizuizi Labor Camp.

Ms. Zhang was forced to glue bird feathers onto some crafts from 5 a.m. to about 9 p.m. every day at the labor camp. The guards also forced her to watch videos smearing Falun Gong and write thought reports.

After her term ended, the 610 Office took her straight to a brainwashing center, where she was held for an additional four months. Her scabies festered and oozed pus and blood. She also once ran a high fever of 40oC (104oF).

Ms. Zhang’s daughter Mei (alias), also a Falun Gong practitioner, was arrested in November 2003 and sentenced to seven years in prison. Mei’s young daughter had to move in with Ms. Zhang. The police ordered her to write statements to renounce Falun Gong. She refused and went into hiding to avoid being persecuted.

While distributing Falun Gong materials at the Dehui City Hospital in April 2014, Ms. Zhang was reported and arrested. She managed to escape from the Dehui City Police Department.

In August 2015, Ms. Zhang was arrested again after being reported for distributing Falun Gong materials. She was detained for seven days. The relentless persecution took a toll on her health and she died in April 2016, at the age of 77.
