Ms. Ke Juxiu, a retired bank employee, died in April 2021, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong. She was around 79.
Below is one of the many episodes of arrest and detention that Ms. Ke endured over the past two decades.
Ms. Ke went to Maqiao Town to distribute Falun Gong informational materials after 7 a.m. on April 19, 2018. She gave a man a copy, and he put it in his pocket and went into a hair salon. Ms. Ke then went into an appliance shop, hoping to pass out some materials there. Two officers suddenly appeared out of nowhere and seized her. It dawned on her that the man who went into the salon must have reported her.
When the chief of the Maqiao Town Police Station interrogated Ms. Ke, she refused to reveal her name or address. He snatched her bag, took out the Falun Gong informational materials, and laid them on the desk. He then made her sit by the desk and attempted to take pictures of her. She refused to comply. He rummaged through her bag again and found an electricity bill with her name and address.
The chief took the key in her bag and went with several officers to raid her home. They confiscated dozens of her Falun Gong books and informational materials.
Ms. Ke was then taken for a physical exam. After a chest X-ray and liver and biliary ultrasound, she was found to have a tumor in her gallbladder. The doctor said she was not fit for detention, but the police chief still took her to the Xian’an District Detention Center. A guard there looked at her exam results and refused to admit her. The police chief then called his supervisor, who pressed the detention center to accept her.
The detention center guards ordered Ms. Ke to sign statements to renounce Falun Gong. She refused to comply. On May 1, 2018, her blood pressure suddenly shot up. The guards ordered her to take hypertension medications. She refused, and the head inmate arranged another inmate to watch her while she showered for fear she might faint. She did feel dizzy and had heart palpitations, a stomachache, and leg weakness. She took a fall while using the restroom.
A few days later, someone from the local procuratorate came to depose her and forced her to sign the deposition.
About a month later, a guard showed Ms. Ke a piece of paper with the seal of the procuratorate. He asked her what she thought about Falun Gong being labeled a cult. She wrote that no law in China ever criminalizes Falun Gong or labels it a cult. The guard scolded her for writing such a statement but didn’t make further demands.
On her 37th day in the detention center, her son, daughter, and son-in-law were notified to pick her up.
