A woman in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, died around December 15, 2021, while in hiding to avoid being arrested for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Zhang Fengyun’s ordeal began on September 25, 2018, when her home was raided by officer Wang Jianfeng from the Yuanbaoshan Police Station and agents from the Yuanbaoshan Police Department and the Chifeng City Police Department. They confiscated all her Falun Gong books, computer, printer, the deed to her house, her household registration book, and a certificate of deposit for 200,000 yuan.
Ms. Zhang was not in, so the police arrested her husband, Mr. Song Xiandong. The police targeted them after receiving a tip that their daughter, Ms. Song Sijuan, was set to travel to the U.S. to attend an overseas singing competition. Mr. Song and Ms. Song also practice Falun Gong.
The police put Ms. Zhang and her daughter on the wanted list and froze Ms. Zhang’s retirement account. The pair struggled to make ends meet while living away from home. The destitute life took a toll on Ms. Zhang’s health. She passed away around mid-December 2021.
Mr. Song was later sentenced to ten months and admitted to the Chifeng Fourth Prison. Prior to that, he was given an unknown term of forced labor, also for his faith in Falun Gong.
