81-year-old Woman Faces Prosecution for Talking to a Young Man about Falun Gong

(Minghui.org) Two years after Ms. Wei Shaomin finished serving a 7.5-year term for her faith in Falun Gong, the 81-year-old woman is facing prosecution again after being reported by a man for talking to him about Falun Gong.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

While waiting for a bus on August 8, 2022, Ms. Wei, of Fushun City, Liaoning Province, talked to a young man in his 20s about Falun Gong. Pretending to be listening to her, he secretly called the police. When Ms. Wei’s bus came, he followed her onto the bus. He made a few more calls to the police while on the bus. After Ms. Wei found out, he refused to let her leave. The police came shortly after Ms. Wei got off the bus and arrested her.

Ms. Wei was held at the Fushun City Detention Center for ten days and then released due to her advanced age. The Dongzhou District Procuratorate called her family on January 16, 2023, and ordered her to go there in three days to answer some questions. It’s not clear whether she complied.

Prior to her latest arrest, Ms. Wei was seized by the police while studying Falun Gong books with four other practitioners at a private residence on June 20, 2014. She was sentenced to 7.5 years in the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison on March 19, 2015. She suffered three strokes in prison and was in critical condition.

Despite her condition, Ms. Wei was still verbally abused by the inmates. As her condition kept worsening, the prison released her on March 19, 2021, nine months before her term was set to end.

Upon returning home, she was dealt another blow when the social security office suspended her pension, citing a new policy that prohibits Falun Gong practitioners serving time for their faith from receiving any retirement benefits, although no Chinese labor law has such stipulation.
