(Minghui.org) Two women in Dandong City, Liaoning Province, are scheduled to stand trial on February 17, 2022, for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Zhang Shuxia and Ms. Sun Shumei were arrested on September 10, 2021, after being reported for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. Both of their homes were ransacked.

When the women were taken to the hospital for a physical checkup, Ms. Sun revealed that she’d had cancer of the liver in 1999. The tumor was 8 cm wide and her doctor then was unable to operate on it. But by practicing Falun Gong, she quickly recovered without any medical intervention. After hearing her story, the detention center guards refused to accept her and released her on bail. Ms. Zhang was admitted to the detention center.

Ms. Sun was summoned by the Zhen’an District Procuratorate on January 7, 2022. The prosecutor threatened to sentence her if she didn’t plead guilty and renounce Falun Gong. Ms. Sun insisted that she didn’t do anything wrong by practicing her faith.

The authorities took Ms. Sun back into custody at the Dandong City Detention Center on January 13, 2022. She and Ms. Zhang are scheduled to appear in the Zhen’an District Court on February 17. Ms. Zhang’s family has hired a lawyer to represent her.

Ms. Zhang, 68, also saw her health improve by practicing Falun Gong. Many of her chronic ailments, including headaches, rheumatism, and uterine fibroids, were cured.

Ms. Zhang was previously arrested on March 30, 2009, and sentenced to seven years in Liaoning Women’s Prison. When she was admitted to the prison on September 15, 2009, Zuo Xiaoyan, the head of the eighth ward, said to guard Li Zhe, “This is how to handle her. [If she doesn’t cooperate with you,] you can use electric batons or rubber sticks on her.”

The guards handcuffed her to the heating pipes with her toes off the ground. They took off her jacket and left her with only one inner layer. Then they opened the window to let the cold wind blow on her. They forced her to stand in a basin of ice-cold water and poured a basin of ice-cold water over her head. They tucked her shirt into her pants so that the water would accumulate around her abdomen. They kept her standing in the water for hours, causing her feet to swell and keeping her legs from bending. She lost her balance, fell down, and fainted.

At one time, when Ms. Zhang became incontinent and wet her pants, she bent over and cleaned the floor. The inmate who tortured her later told her that what she did reminded her of her own mother.

Knowing that the inmates were being forced to monitor and torture her, Ms. Zhang often shared her food with them, even though she was starving herself.
