Liaoning Woman Faces Prison Sentence for Refusing to Renounce Her Faith

(Minghui.org) A Dandong City, Liaoning Province resident was taken to the Dandong City Detention Center and is facing prosecution, as she refuses to renounce her faith in Falun Gong.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Sun Shumei was first arrested on September 10, 2021, for putting up a banner with information about Falun Gong. Ten officers ransacked her home and confiscated her Falun Gong books and other personal items. Due to her poor health, she was released on bail soon after.

On January 7, 2022, Ms. Sun was summoned by prosecutor Zhu Xiaobo of the Zhen’an District Procuratorate. Zhu alleged that Ms. Sun is against the Chinese Communist Party and should be prosecuted for her wrong political standing. Ms. Sun’s family argued that one shouldn’t be criminalized for one’s thoughts and demanded Zhu dismiss her case, but to no avail.

Zhu promised to clear Ms. Sun of prosecution as long as she agreed to renounce Falun Gong and admit her guilt. Ms. Sun insisted that she didn’t do anything wrong.

Below is the conversation between Zhu and Ms. Sun.

Prosecutor Zhu: “Don’t talk to me about Zhen-Shan-Ren (Falun Gong’s principles, Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance). [It’s wrong] for you to put up information about quitting the Chinese Communist Party.”

Ms. Sun: “Which law did I violate in putting up information about quitting the Party?”

Prosecutor Zhu: “We think you’ve committed a crime. The Chinese Communist Party is so great.”

Ms. Sun: “How many Party members have gained citizenship of western countries? They transferred all of their money and moved their family members abroad. How can they still represent the interest of the Chinese people? If the government is so great, why don’t they just stay here?”

Prosecutor Zhu: “That’s only a few individuals.”

Ms. Sun: “But they still represent the Party organization.”

Prosecutor Zhu: “You’d better tell me that you won’t practice Falun Gong anymore. If you do, just do it at home in private.”

Ms. Sun: “I have to practice it. I used to be very sick (with late-stage liver cancer in 1999). But after I took up Falun Gong, I was no longer in pain and recovered.”

Unable to refute her, Zhu became infuriated and threw away her pen.

Ms. Sun was summoned to the procuratorate again on January 13, 2022 and then brought to the Zhen’an District Court. A court staff member asked her, “Are the things confiscated from your home yours? Are you pleading guilty? Are you hiring a lawyer?”

The police then took Ms. Sun to the hospital for a physical examination. She was required to pay for the medical expenses herself. The results were all normal, so she was taken to the Dandong City Detention Center in the afternoon and has been held there since.
