(Minghui.org) More than 100 officers in Jinan, Shandong Province were dispatched to follow and arrest an elderly couple on July 29, 2014. Ms. Feng Guoyun (冯国云), a 69-year-old retired government official, and her husband Mr. Liu Chengshan (刘成善), 73, were first taken to Beiyuan Police Station before being transferred to Jinan City Detention Center.

What did the couple do to warrant such a heavy police operation?

Just one week earlier, the couple managed to dial a phone number connected to a bus stop announcement system in Beijing. They played a pre-recorded message exposing the violent persecution of Falun Gong by the Chinese Communist regime.

Because all legal means of protest are denied to Falun Gong practitioners and relevant information is heavily censored by the state in favor of its own hate propaganda, practitioners sometimes resort to creative means to raise public awareness of the persecution.

Their unauthorized announcement touched a nerve, and Guo Shengkun, the Minister of Public Security, immediately labeled this a key case and ordered the Shandong Province Public Security Bureau to conduct an investigation. A special task force was soon set up and charged with finding out who made the phone call.

The police soon identified the couple using various surveillance tools. They arrested the couple and ransacked their home, confiscating personal property including computers, printers, smartphones and Falun Gong books.

Mr. Liu was released on bail on September 5, 2014, while Ms. Feng is awaiting possible trial at Jinan Detention Center.

As Tianqiao District Procuratorate comtemplates indicting Ms. Feng, her family hired a lawyer to defend her right to practice Falun Gong and inform the public of its persecution.
