(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioners Mr. Guo Huisheng and Ms. Li Jumei, husband and wife from Jiahe County, Hunan Province, were illegally arrested and detained in 2009. Mr. Guo was persecuted to death, and Ms. Li was tortured so badly that she bled profusely. Only then was she granted bail for medical treatment.
Through practicing Falun Gong, Ms. Li miraculously regained good health. However, Li Dexiao, the county's head of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee, instigated the county court to put Ms. Li on trial on September 16, 2013.
Ms. Li was forced to leave home and become homeless to avoid being sentenced and imprisoned.

Abuse in Police Custody Leads to Death
On July 6, 2009, Mr. Guo and his wife called Lanshan County's chief of police Xi Xiaogang regarding another Falun Gong practitioner, Ms. Xiao Silan. Ms. Xiao had been arrested by Yongzhou City police and was being persecuted in the Lanshan County Detention Center.
The couple were concerned about her welfare. After the phone call, they sent the police chief a letter with information about Falun Gong, in an effort to rescue Ms. Xiao.
For this, they were reported to the Hunan Province 610 Office and subsequently persecuted themselves.
On August 6, 2009, under the orders of the 610 Office, Mr. Guo was arrested at home by the Jiahe City police and Hu Yonghui and Ou Zhibin from the Domestic Security Division.
Mr. Guo was forced to the ground, his hands were handcuffed behind his back, and he was severely beaten. Blood gushed all over his head and face. Then, four or five policemen transported him to the police station.
His wife and another Falun Gong practitioner, Liao Hongcui, a retired worker, were arrested as well. The police ransacked their homes and stole valuable items.
Mr. Guo suddenly lost consciousness on October 6, 2009, while being detained. He was taken to the county hospital, where he received brain surgery. However, his condition did not improve, and he remained in a coma. He passed away on October 12, 2009.
Strong Defense Silences the Judges
Mr. Guo's wife, Ms. Li, remained in detention after his death. The 610 Office and other officials were planning to put her on trial.
Ms. Li was tried on January 12, 2010. The court did not notify her family. She defended herself and pleaded not guilty. She relayed to the judges how Falun Gong had benefited her and urged them to quit the Chinese Communist Party. As a result of her strong defense, the judges adjourned the court proceedings.
Health Regained Through Falun Gong Practice
On January 18, 2010, Ms. Li experienced severe vaginal bleeding. She fainted and was taken to the hospital. She heard a doctor say, “I wonder if she'll survive longer than 2-3 months.”
In order to avoid responsibility for her deteriorating condition, the detention center granted her medical parole. Ms. Li was still monitored by the police upon returning home.
Ms. Li miraculously recovered once she resumed practicing Falun Gong.
Discharged from Workplace and Framed by Officials
Since the Chinese communist regime started persecuting Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Li has been detained many times, sent to a forced labor camp twice, and issued heavy fines. Her husband was persecuted to death.
Since her arrest in 2009, Ms. Li has not been allowed to return to work and has not been paid a salary. This has affected not only her livelihood, but also that of her elderly parents. Ms. Li requested her superiors to allow her to return to work many times, but to no avail.
Li Dexiao, the head of the county Political and Legal Affairs Committee, threatened her: “Don't talk about Falun Gong! Since you said that you're physically well, I'll have to put you back in jail!”
In July 2013, Ms. Li documented the persecution she has been subjected to and submitted her article to Minghui.org.
This infuriated Li Dexiao, who then colluded with several judges to reopen Ms. Li's case. He also attempted to blackmail Ms. Li, saying that if she guaranteed not to clarify the facts about the persecution to the public and distribute informational materials about Falun Gong, her unpaid wages would be paid and her retirement would be arranged. Ms. Li refused the deal.
On September 16, 2013, Huang Jianlong, presiding judge of the Jiahe County Criminal Court, summoned Ms. Li to appear in court at 8 o'clock the following morning. According to Huang, “A higher official's instruction would make it impossible not to sentence her.”
Ms. Li was thus forced to flee her residence in order to avoid being sentenced and imprisoned for her peaceful belief.
