GHI/Geneva : Falun Gong – Unleashing the Terror Against 'Dreamers'

Falun Gong practitioners have been persecuted in China since July 1999, as confirmed by Amnesty International. The repression has taken a particularly brutal toll -- the imprisonment of 50,000 people, many of them forced to do hard labor and tortured. Falun Gong is a peaceful exercise, generally practiced in parks and consisting of breathing exercises and meditation, hardly a threatening movement. It seems that its rapidly gained popularity in China is what caused fear to the Chinese authorities. We went to talk to Falun Gong followers in the Parc des Bastions in Switzerland one Sunday morning. This is what we found.

Shandong Practitioner Yang Guizhen Tortured to Death

Yang Guizhen, 40, was a villager from Taojialin Village in the township of Guanzhen, Zhucheng City, Shandong Province. She was arrested this September for distributing Falun Gong flyers and thrown into the Zhucheng City Detention Center. The guards brought her in for an interrogation on September 14th, and because she refused to sign a form that declared her to be a member of a XX, several guards instigated some inmates to give her a terrible beating. After the beating, she was handcuffed to a chair for four days and four nights. During that time, she was not given any food or water, and she was not even allowed to go to the bathroom. When she was finally allowed to go to the bathroom on the 17th, she was no longer able to walk on her own, fell unconscious to the ground, and stopped breathing. A guard resuscitated her by pinching her Renzhong (a major acupuncture point). As soon as she regained consciousness, the guards handcuffed her back to the chair again. A short while later, this gentle and kind farming woman passed away forever. After the tragedy took place, an information blockade was imposed right away. Trying to prevent the news of her death from leaking out, the police surrounded her village, kept a close watch over her relatives, and arrested any practitioner who had known her or was trying to find out what had happened to her. But as all the crimes committed against Falun Gong practitioners are being exposed one by one, how could they stop the news of a death from coming out? How could a precious life just vanish without trace? The truth always manages to come out in the end. Mainland Practitioners November 19th, 2000

SOUTH PLAINFIELD – On Saturday mornings in Spring Lake Park one needs to look repeatedly at the American flag flying in the wind to be reminded that the park is not in China. The morning mist covers the lake and from inside a pagoda like gazebo the sharp and distinct tones of Chinese music fill the air. Inside the gazebo a circle of men and women, most Chinese, slowly assume different postures as they practice the principles of Falun Gong.
