(Minghui.org) An 84-year-old woman in Jiulongpo District, Chongqing, was sentenced to one year and three months on June 4, 2026, because she practices Falun Gong.
Ms. Jiang Chengliang’s latest prison sentence came on the heels of a prior six-month sentence given in early January 2026. The first prison term followed an incident in 2024 when she was reported for distributing Falun Gong informational materials. The police harassed her at home frequently and all her Falun Gong books, laptop, music player, and other valuables were seized. They also took her for physical exams many times. Each time she was deemed unfit for detention as her systolic blood pressure hovered over 220 mmHg (when a normal range is 120 or lower). The police arranged people to watch her take hypertension medications.
The Jiulongpo District Court tried Ms. Jiang in early January 2026 and sentenced her to six months. She was allowed to serve time outside of prison.
Even before her first prison term ended, the court held a new trial of her on May 12, 2026. She was given one year and three months on June 4, 2026, with the new prison term commencing immediately after the end of the first one.
Ms. Jiang, who lives alone, credits Falun Gong for restoring her health and giving her strength to deal with life’s obstacles. Her older son developed a mental disorder after his business failed and his wife divorced him. He’s long-time patient at a psychiatric hospital. His younger brother is a taxi driver and too busy to help their mother, who has been taken into custody despite her poor health.
