(Minghui.org) An 83-year-old woman in Shuangyashan City, Heilongjiang Province, was sent to prison on July 31, 2025 to serve a 1.5-year term given in late 2021 for practicing Falun Gong.

Minghui.org previously reported that Ms. Liu Huiju was seized at her home at 9 a.m. on June 12, 2025, by eight police officers. They strapped her on a gurney and took her to the hospital in an ambulance. They claimed they were taking her to the hospital for a physical exam, but they took her to a detention center after the checkup and then transferred her to a new prison on July 31, 2025. Her family was not notified of her whereabouts and only recently found out that she was sent to prison. They still don’t known the name of the new prison.

Ms. Liu began to practice Falun Gong on June 26, 1996. She credits the practice for helping her recover from various ailments, including a heart condition, arthritis, and insomnia. After the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, she was repeatedly targeted for upholding her faith.

Ms. Liu was arrested again on May 12, 2020, and her home was ransacked. The police later released her on bail and put her on residential surveillance. They submitted her case to the Shuangyashan City Procuratorate in August 2021, which indicted her and transferred her case to the Shuangyashan City Court.

The mental pressure from the persecution took a toll on Ms. Liu’s health. She developed persistent high blood pressure and her old heart condition returned. Because she wasn’t able to travel, the judge and the prosecutor tried her at home on November 30, 2021 and sentenced her to 1.5 years with a 1,000-yuan fine at the end of the hearing. Given her poor health, the court didn’t immediately order her to start serving the term but eventually jailed her in June 2025.
