(Minghui.org) The Minghui.org website previously reported the death of a 71-year-old woman who passed away at the Liaoning Province Second Women’s Prison on May 9, 2025, while serving a four-year term for her faith in Falun Gong. In this article, we present new information recently confirmed by Minghui.org regarding the abusive environment Ms. Wang Yan faced in her final days.

Ms. Wang, from Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, was initially arrested at home on March 5, 2022, after being reported for distributing Falun Gong informational materials in a residential area. Officer Fang Peng and others from the Dongta Police Station confiscated her Falun Gong books, portrait of Falun Gong’s founder, and cell phone.

The police released Ms. Wang on bail three days later after extorting 5,000 yuan from her. Officer Fang harassed her at home on July 19, 2022 and warned her that a judge was “looking for her.” He returned the next day and took her to the Shenyang City First Detention Center. She was first held in Division 5, then transferred to Division 3 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The Dadong District Court sentenced her to a four-year prison term at an unknown time. She was admitted to the Liaoning Province Second Women’s Prison on February 15, 2023 (likely in Division 3) and died there on May 9, 2025.

Ms. Wang was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was still in the detention center, prior to being sent to the prison. According to prison rules, those with severe illnesses shouldn’t be admitted, and if she had applied for medical parole, she should have been allowed to serve time at home. Despite her condition, the prison not only admitted her, but also forced her to write statements and record videos renouncing Falun Gong against her will, and subjected her to other forms of abuse.

The prison rules also state that inmates who are 65 or older, or have severe illnesses, should be assigned to the elderly and infirm division, and exempted from doing forced labor. But Falun Gong practitioners are not assigned to the elderly and infirm division, no matter their ages or physical conditions.

Liaoning Province Second Women’s Prison

Liaoning currently has two women’s prisons, the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison and the Liaoning Province Second Women’s Prison. Both prisons are located in Shenyang City, and are separated by a wall. Most of the inmates detained there are from Liaoning, with some from other provinces, such as Guangdong and Sichuan.

When the Liaoning Province Second Women’s Prison was established on August 31, 2019, inmates from the 3rd, 8th, and 10th divisions in Liaoning Province Women’s Prison were moved here.

According to a prison guard, Liaoning Province Women’s Prison is used to detain inmates with prison terms longer than 15 years, or received a death penalty, along with inmates involved in significant cases or from other countries. Most of the inmates at Liaoning Province Second Women’s Prison, under warden Ma Xiao, are serving shorter terms of less than ten years. Most Falun Gong practitioners have been admitted to the Liaoning Province Second Women’s Prison in recent years.

In order to force the practitioners to renounce Falun Gong, the guards instigate the inmates to torture them. If the practitioners don’t renounce Falun Gong, the guards punish the inmates by not allowing them to buy daily necessities, have breaks, have meals, use hot water, or wash themselves. Some inmates were also denied visits with their families, or deprived of term reductions. As a result, the inmates spared no efforts in using various torture methods to transform the practitioners. The practitioners often suffer injuries all over their bodies or have broken teeth from the beatings.

In the winter, the inmates forced the practitioners to wear shorts and tanktops, and then opened the window to let freezing wind blow on them. Some poured ice cold water over them. Some inmates only allowed the practitioners to eat one or two spoons of rice and drink one or two spoons of water each day. Some practitioners weren’t allowed to use toilet paper when they used the restroom. When they slept at night, they weren’t allowed to use blanket or pillow. Any inmate who attempted to help a practitioner would be verbally abused or beaten themselves.
