71-Year-Old Man Tortured to Critical Condition While Jailed for His Faith, Dies in Hospital

A 71-year-old Chongqing resident was brutally tortured and fell into critical condition while jailed at the Yongchuan Prison for his faith in Falun Gong. He was taken to the Chongqing Second Hospital for treatment, only to die there on April 17, 2025.

Due to strict information censorship and the cover-up of the persecution of Falun Gong by the Chinese communist regime, it’s not clear when Mr. Tang Fenghua was arrested (likely late 2021 or early 2022) or sentenced. It was reported that he was serving a prison term of either 4 or 4.5 years and was expected to finish serving his term sometime in 2025.

Mr. Tang, the owner of a furniture store, had been repeatedly targeted since the onset of the persecution in 1999. He had previously served two prison terms for a total of five years.

He was arrested on April 10, 2013 while distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. He was held at the Yongchuan District Detention Center and later sentenced to three years. He served time at the Yongchuan Prison in Chongqing and was released in January 2016.

Mr. Tang was arrested again on the morning of December 6, 2016 and held at the Jishan Brainwashing Center for more than ten days.

Only days after he was released, he was taken back into custody around January 10, 2017, after the police received a tip that he was distributing Falun Gong materials on the street. He was sentenced to two years and released on January 9, 2019.

Between August 31, 2019 and March 2021, Mr. Tang was harassed multiple times by the local police.

Mr. Tang was arrested another time around 11 a.m. on April 28, 2021, by two officers. One of them was named He Chengjun, a member of the Yongchuan District Domestic Security Division who actively participated in the persecution. They confiscated Mr. Tang’s copy of Zhuan Falun, the main text of Falun Gong, and took him to the Yongchuan District People’s Hospital for a physical examination, before sending him to the Yongchuan District Detention Center.

Mr. Tang began to vomit blood on September 25, 2021 and was taken to the Chongqing Second Hospital for treatment. He was found to have tuberculosis and released on October 9, 2021.
