(Minghui.org) Ms. Tian Haiying, 58, from Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, was sentenced to one and a half years for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.

Ms. Tian was arrested on August 20, 2024, by officers from the Chaisang District Police Department and the Shahe Police Station. She was found to have a systolic blood pressure reading of 220 mmHg (when a normal range is 120 or lower) and was denied admission to the local detention center.

The police refused to release Ms. Tian and took her to a police-managed ward in the Jiujiang City First Hospital. After 15 days of administrative detention there, she was given criminal detention at the Jiujiang City Detention Center. She was then issued a formal arrest warrant by the Chaisang District Procuratorate.

The Yongxiu County Court tried Ms. Tian at the detention center on December 25, 2024 and she was later sentenced at an unknown date. She is appealing her wrongful conviction.

This is not the first time that Ms. Tian, who once worked as a substitute teacher, has been targeted for her faith. She was previously given four forced labor terms and served three of them for about six years (the other time she was denied admission to the local labor camp due to her high blood pressure). She also served another 3.5-year prison term. Additionally, she was detained multiple times at various other facilities.

Ms. Tian’s husband Gui Xunlu divorced her while she was held at a labor camp in 2006. He barred her from contacting their daughter, who later became a lecturer at a university in Beijing. He also took possession of their marital assets and sold their house without her consent. He pocketed all the money, and she had no home to return to after she was released. She had to move in with her parents and did odd jobs to support herself. Despite her financial struggle, she still helped whomever was in need and is liked by her coworkers and manager.

Past Persecution

Ms. Tian went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in October 2000 and was arrested. After being taken back to Jiangxi Province, she was held at the Jiujiang City Detention Center for three months. After that, she was taken straight to a brainwashing center. She was not released until the police extorted 3,000 yuan from her.

Ms. Tian was arrested again in May 2001 and given two years of forced labor. She was released in May 2003.

After another arrest on July 9, 2004, Ms. Tian was given three years of forced labor. Her term was extended by more than one month and she was released on August 20, 2004.

Ms. Tian’s next arrest was on November 20, 2009, and she was brutally tortured in custody. She went on a hunger strike in protest and was restrained in a bed and force-fed for extended periods of time. The police didn’t release her until she was on the verge of death.

The police seized Ms. Tian on December 29, 2009 and gave her two years of forced labor. She was released ahead of time, on August 27, 2010, after she developed dangerously high blood pressure.

Ms. Tian was arrested on January 3, 2008 and held for an unknown amount of time. After she was arrested in 2010, she was given one and a half years of forced labor. Due to her high blood pressure, she was denied admission to the local labor camp. Only then did the police release her.

Ms. Tian was arrested on April 7, 2012 and detained for about two weeks. She was detained for some time following another arrest on July 30, 2012.

An arrest on June 10, 2014 resulted in Ms. Tian being sentenced to three and a half years in prison. The trial at the end of August 2014 lasted less than 30 minutes. She was admitted to the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison in early November 2014. She was brutally tortured, including being handcuffed and hung up by the handcuffs for ten days straight.

Ms. Tian was arrested a few more times, on June 14, 2018, July 29, 2021, and March 15, 2022. Each time she was held for an unknown amount of time.
