Ms. Cui Xiangzhi, 91, of Tahe County, Heilongjiang Province, died on December 30, 2019, after living in fear for the past over two decades.

Ms. Cui, her son-in-law Mr. Yuan Yanming, and her daughter-in-law Ms. Tian Jinling were repeatedly targeted for their shared faith in Falun Gong. While Ms. Cui was never arrested herself, she witnessed the arrests of Mr. Yuan and Ms. Tian. The trio’s respective homes were also raided many times. They faced constant harassment from the police in an attempt to make them renounce Falun Gong.

Officer Zhang from the Tanan Police Station once broke into Ms. Cui’s home and asked if she still practiced Falun Gong. She said she did because all her illnesses disappeared after she took up Falun Gong in 1998. Zang left, but his fellow officer Cao Weihe raided Ms. Cui’s home soon after.

After her son-in-law and daughter-in-law were arrested, officer Han Guozhu from the Tanan Police Station harassed her at home. She was helping care for her two grandsons and both she and the boys were terrified.

Ms. Cui said she often cried after her son-in-law and daughter-in-law were arrested. She lived in fear all day long.

Persecution of Son-in-law: Two Years of Forced Labor

Mr. Yuan took up Falun Gong in 1996 and recovered from his back pain. After the persecution began, officer Han raided his home many times. He and his wife lived away from home for a while, and Han scaled Ms. Cui’s fence to look for him. The police put him on the wanted list in 2001.

Han showed up on November 23, 2001, and deceived Mr. Yuan and his wife into going to the Tanan Police Station, where they were arrested. While his wife was soon released, Mr. Yuan was held at the Tahe County Detention Center for 15 days. He was also fined 2,000 yuan and forced to pay 300 yuan for his living expenses there.

Mr. Yuan was arrested again on February 14, 2006, and given two years of forced labor in the Suihua Labor Camp, despite the fact that he had a relapse of his back pain due to the abuse in detention.

The labor camp guards subjected Mr. Yuan to various forms of abuse, including forced labor and sitting on a small stool for long hours. He was also made to watch videos that defamed Falun Gong and give blood samples. Team lead Li Chenghun forced him to take pills when his heartbeat was abnormal. He would have spasms right after swallowing the pills.

Mr. Han was arrested again in 2016 and given two weeks of detention. He later landed a job but the police pressured his employer to fire him in the summer of 2021.

The police never did remove his name from the wanted list. As a result, he was unable to fly. He asked to be removed from the wanted list and was told, “No way.” He was harassed again in March 2024.

Persecution of Daughter-in-law

Officer Han showed up at Ms. Tian’s home after 10 p.m. on October 25, 2002. She was not in and Han terrorized her young child and mother-in-law. Han returned three days later at around the same time to harass her and her family.

On February 14, 2006, several officers arrested Ms. Tian and Mr. Yuan and took them to the Tahe County Detention Center. Ms. Tian was fined over 700 yuan and released 15 days later.

Han harassed Ms. Tian again in 2007. She was arrested on July 10, 2014, and held for 12 days. In 2023, the police harassed her on the phone many times.
