(Minghui.org) A 72-year-old man of Chaohu City, Anhui Province, almost died from torture while serving time at the Suzhou Prison for his faith in Falun Gong.
While information regarding Mr. Yu Zhiqiang’s arrest and prison sentencing aren’t clear, he has been held in Suzhou Prison since at least 2021.
According to insiders, because Mr. Yu remained firm in his faith and refused to write statements to renounce Falun Gong, the guards tortured him by hanging him up, making him stand for long hours, shocking him with electric batons, and spraying him with pepper water.
The guards also forced Mr. Yu to do hard labor without pay. They also often put up posters smearing Falun Gong in the workshop. He tore the posters down every time he saw them.
Instigated by the guards, the inmates once beat and verbally abused him and sprayed him with dozens of bottles of hot pepper water. Several of Mr. Yu’s teeth were knocked out during the beating. He had severe injuries on his head and was taken to the Wanbei Hospital for resuscitation in February 2021. Although he survived, he had to remain in the prison hospital for a long time to recover.
Mr. Yu is currently held in the division for the elderly, disabled or infirm, where the living condition is even worse than regular divisions.
According to limited information available about Mr. Yu, he has been arrested multiple times for practicing Falun Gong. He was taken to a brainwashing center in July 2001. He was detained another time after being reported by a couple for talking to their child about Falun Gong. He may have served a prior prison term as well.
