Ms. Qiu Shuqin, a former staffer of the Academic Affairs Office of Tsinghua University in Beijing, was arrested and taken to the notorious Masanjia Forced Labor Camp in Liaoning Province, before the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She was brutally tortured and had a hole in her skull as a result. After struggling with failing health for years, she died on April 11, 2018.
Because Ms. Qiu refused to renounce Falun Gong after the onset of the persecution in 1999, she was forced to retire early. In 2002, the school suspended her pension, causing tremendous financial predicament to her and her family. After she was forced to live away from home to avoid the persecution, two school staffers harassed her parents on September 27, 2002 and threatened to come back again, leaving her parents deeply terrified.
Only a few days later, in early October 2002, Ms. Qiu was arrested while attending a local practitioners’ gathering and detained for a month.
She was arrested again in the spring of 2003. Due to her high blood pressure, she was taken to the police hospital for treatment. She held a hunger strike to protest and was released on the verge of death.
In 2003, she was arrested and given 1.5 years of forced labor camp. After she was admitted to the Beijing Women’s Forced Labor Camp in June 2003, she was forced to stand for long hours and beaten by the guards. She was also deprived of sleep at night.
Not long after her release, she was arrested again around February 2005, while visiting a local practitioner. She was denied admission to the detention center due to her high blood pressure and then released.
Prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she was arrested at her mother’s home. The police accused her of sending her persecution reports to Minghui.org. She held a hunger strike to protest and was taken to the hospital. A month later, she was taken to a labor camp. As she refused to talk, the guards force fed her with cold water and didn’t allow her to sleep. She was held in solitary confinement for nearly two months.
In late July 2008, right before the Olympics, she was transferred to the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp in Liaoning Province. She was subjected to beating and other abuses. Once she shouted “Falun Dafa is good.” The guards dragged her around, slapped her in the face, hung her up by the wrists, and shocked her with electric batons. She felt intense pain on her head and passed out. After she came to, someone told her that the guards beat her on the head with the baton. After she was taken to the hospital, the doctor found her skull was broken and had a hole. She was later released and taken back to Beijing. Only a month after her release, her mother, who had lived under tremendous fear, pressure, and distress over Ms. Qiu’s ordeal, passed away.
Ms. Qiu struggled to recover since, yet still had to face constant harassment by the police. She was hospitalized many times and eventually passed away on April 11, 2018. She was 64.
