(Minghui.org) A 63-year-old resident of Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia developed severe diabetes while serving five years in prison for her faith in Falun Gong. She was denied family visits and has likely been subjected to torture.
Ms. Song Jingxia, a former dairy factory accountant, took up Falun Gong in 2007 and soon recovered from her decades-long illnesses. She went out to distribute Falun Gong informational materials on January 31, 2022 and was arrested by officers from the Labu Dalin Second Police Station. They took her to the Hailar District Detention Center and raided her home afterwards. They videotaped and threatened her family members.
Ms. Song was sentenced to five years around June 2022 and admitted to the Inner Mongolia First Women’s Prison soon afterwards. She had already developed diabetes symptoms while being held at the detention center. Her thighs became so swollen that she couldn’t walk well, and she was losing toenails from two of her toes. The detention center guards didn’t render her any medical attention. After her prison transfer, Ms. Song’s condition kept worsening and by December 2023, her feet developed open, runny sores that oozed out pus. The skin on her feet turned dark and emitted a pungent smell. Her feet hurt so much that she couldn’t sleep at night.
The prison guards forced Ms. Song to take unknown drugs every day but she did not see any improvement. According to an insider, she is under the direct supervision of the head of Division Eight.
Ms. Song’s husband was not notified of her condition until March 2024. He requested a visit but his request was denied. He traveled to the prison in July 2024 and was turned away. He worries that his wife is being tortured just like other jailed Falun Gong practitioners.
The prison is known for using carrot-and-stick tactics in their attempts to force the practitioners to renounce their faith. When the practitioners remain firm in their faith after brainwashing sessions, the guards subject them to various forms of torture, including beatings, electric shocks, involuntary drug administration, and sleep deprivation.
The abuse has resulted in at least nine deaths over the years. Four of the practitioners died in the prison, including Ms. Yuan Shumei who died in early February 2003, Ms. Yu Xiulan who died at an unknown time, Ms. Zhou Caixia who died in July 2003, and Ms. Tang Haihua who died around September 2009. Five others died after they were released from prison, unable to recover from the torture. They were Ms. Tian Sufang who died on March 15, 2011, Ms. Yu Zhenjie who died on September 7, 2011, Ms. Chai Yulan who died on March 23, 2017, Ms. Yue Shuxia who died on June 6, 2022, and Ms. Geng Xiulan who died at an unknown time.
