(Minghui.org) A 29-year-old resident of Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, was detained for 15 days for practicing Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Mr. Liao Yujie distributed Falun Gong informational materials in a residential area on the night of April 2, 2024 and was reported to police the next morning after the residents discovered the materials. More than 20 officers from the Hengtang Police Station, two agents (one surnamed Dai and the other Xia) from the Gaoxin District Domestic Security Division, as well as around ten people (their identities are not known), broke into Mr. Liao’s home at 9:30 a.m. that morning.
The police raided Mr. Liao’s home and confiscated three Falun Gong books, six cell phones (two belong to him, one to his wife, and three to his mother), his desktop computer, his wife’s laptop, three flash drives, one hard drive, and a printer.
Mr. Liao, his wife, and mother were taken to a case handling center for interrogation. Officer Dai and a policeman from the Hengtang Police Station teamed up to interrogate Mr. Liao. He refused to answer their questions, and a young officer from the Suzhou City Police Department took over the interrogation. Mr. Liao still refused to comply, and about five agents from the Gaoxin District Domestic Security Division came in. One of them was also surnamed Dai and he bragged that he was transferred from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to Jiangsu Province more than ten years ago to specially deal with Falun Gong cases.
Mr. Liao held firm to his faith and one officer threatened to prosecute his wife. It’s not clear whether his wife practices Falun Gong. They released his wife and mother after 10 p.m. that night. Mr. Liao was released after 15 days of detention. He sought the return of the confiscated items but the police have only given him back four cell phones at the time of this report. They claimed that there were no time limits on how long they could keep the confiscated items since he was on criminal detention. It’s unclear whether he faces further prosecution.
