(Minghui.org) Ms. Liu Yulan, 76, from Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province, has been detained in Jinzhou City Detention Center since her arrest on January 18, 2024 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Liu was seized by more than ten officers outside of her apartment building around 4 p.m. on January 18. Her arrest stemmed from an incident in October 2023, when she and another practitioner Mr. Qin Shuhai went to a nearby village to distribute Falun Gong materials. They ran into the village secretary, who stopped them when he didn’t recognize them as village residents. He asked who they were visiting and searched their tricycle. He confiscated four boxes of small calendars which had Falun Gong messages and he reported them to the police. They were both arrested on January 18, 2024.

Mr. Qin’s incapacitated wife was dealt a blow by his arrest. She cried for him every day. Her condition deteriorated quickly and she died on February 13, 2024, the fourth day of the Chinese New Year and 26 days after he was arrested. Mr. Qin’s 81-year-old mother was interrogated by the police and she struggles to live by herself since Mr. Qin is still detained.

Ms. Liu took up Falun Gong in 1996. Her heart condition and many other ailments soon disappeared. Before she retired, she worked as a cashier for the Yi County Salt Company and was well regarded by her coworkers.

In the early 2000s, when Ms. Liu was in her 50s, her husband suddenly died. Years later, in the winter of 2012, her son, then 33, died in a car accident, leaving behind his wife and daughter who was in the second grade. It was Falun Gong that helped Ms. Liu cope with the devastating loss of her loved ones.
