(Minghui.org) In the State of Chu during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty in 559 B.C., a high-ranking official, Wu She, was executed by King Ping of Chu, after being framed by a traitor of the country. The King also summoned Wu’s two sons to the capital, intending to kill them both. The older son, Wu Shang, went and was executed; the younger son, Wu Zixu, fled to the State of Wu so he could one day seek revenge against the King.
On his way to the State of Wu, Wu Zixu was stopped by a large river. Just when he was at a loss, he saw a boat with a fisherman, who gave him a ride across the river. When Wu offered his sword, the only valuable item he had with him, as a token of appreciation, the fisherman declined to accept it, saying, “The King of Chu is offering a reward of 50,000 stones of corn for catching you. If I were a greedy person, I would definitely have reported you.”
I was deeply touched by the fisherman when I read the story. It reminded me of another person, who risked his life to protect a Falun Gong practitioner at the height of the persecution.
That person was Wei Ren (alias), the son of a friend of mine. He was the HR director of a large company. While visiting him in 2010, he told me a story.
“There was a Falun Gong practitioner who got fired by my company for going to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. He was a very nice and hard-working person. A few days ago, his wife came to me, saying that he was looking for a job out-of-town, which required a letter from our local labor bureau (to prove he used to work in our city) and a reference letter from us.”
“She cried so hard, telling me that how hard it was for her husband to find a job after he was fired, as most employers didn’t dare to hire him because of his practice of Falun Gong. She came from the countryside and didn’t have a job either. The family lived a very difficult life in the past few years, often struggling to make ends meet.”
Wei continued, “I was saddened to hear their story and felt great sympathy for them. They shouldn’t suffer such hardship just because of his spiritual faith. It happened that our HR department was preparing retirement paperwork for several employees. So I asked one person from my team to prepare a retirement document for that practitioner so that he could start to receive a pension from now on. I said that I would take responsibility for him and if anyone asked about it, they could just direct it to me.”
I was so touched to hear what Wei told me. I held his hands tightly and said, “You did such a great thing. You will be blessed for it!”
Not long after, Wei was promoted to be the company’s CEO. His father, in his 80s, who had been blind for many years due to diabetes, then had surgery in Beijing. Although the doctor didn’t expect the surgery to help the elderly man to regain his eyesight due to his advanced age and frail health, he was able to see again shortly after the operation! Their family all believed that they were blessed for Wei’s kindness.
During the darkest period of persecution against Falun Gong, many people took part in it to score political points, while others turned a blind eye to it in order to protect themselves from being implicated. But it was really courageous for Wei to give the Falun Gong practitioner a helping hand when he needed it the most.
In addition to Wei, I’ve also met many kind-hearted people, including residential committee staff members, company managers, and some police officers, who quietly helped and protected Falun Gong practitioners, without seeking anything in return. This truly brings hope to Chinese society. When the persecution stops and justice is upheld for Falun Gong, their righteous actions would be known to and respected by more people.
