Additional Persecution News from China – May 28, 2023 (23 Reports)

(Minghui.org) Today's news from China includes incidents of persecution that took place in 19 cities or counties in 12 provinces, where at least 36 practitioners were recently persecuted for their belief.

1. [Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province] Mr. Wang Jian Sentenced to Two Years in Prison

Mr. Wang Jian from Bin County is an assistant communication engineer in Harbin Railway Bureau. He was sentenced to two years in prison and fined 100,000 yuan on March 9, 2023. He appealed to the higher authorities. His family received an express notice from the Harbin Intermediate Court on May 25, 2023, stating that the original sentence was upheld. The second instance requested by Mr. Wang was rejected. 

2. [Jieyang City, Guangdong City] Three Practitioners Persecuted

Ms. Zhong Liena and Ms. Wu Rongduan from the Rongcheng District were arrested in Ms. Wu Rongduan’s home by officers from the Ronghua Police Station in the Rongcheng District on the afternoon of November 25, 2022. Ms. Wu was released the next day because of her poor health. Ms. Zhong has been held in the Jieyang City Detention Center since then.

Ms. Huang Huijun was arrested by officers from the Dongxing Police Station in the Rongcheng District on the morning of January 18, 2023, for posting informational materials about Falun Gong. Her home was ransacked that night and her Falun Gong books were confiscated. She was taken to the Jieyang City Detention Center in the afternoon and has been detained there since then.

3. [Beijing] Ms. Hu Xingxian Sentenced to Three Years in Prison

Ms. Hu Xingxian from Fengtai District, 81, was tried in the Fengtai District Court on February 8, 2023. She was informed on March 30, 2023, that she was sentenced to three years in prison and fined 3000 yuan. 

Ms. Hu appealed her case. She received a call from the No.2 Intermediate Court of Beijing on May 26, 2023, that someone would talk to her about her case. 

4. [Changchun City, Jilin Province] Ms. Yu Yongqin and Ms. Yu Fengzhen Sentenced

Ms. Yu Yongqin and Ms. Yu Fengzhen were sentenced and detained in the Dehui City Detention Center.

5. [Baoji City, Shaanxi Province] Ms. Cai Tongfang and Ms. Gao Hongmei Arrested

Ms. Cai Tongfang and Ms. Gao Hongmei were arrested by officers from the Baoping Road Police Station when they talked to people about Falun Gong at Baoping Road at 6:30 p.m. on May 11, 2023. They have been detained.

6. [Beijing] Ke Xingguo and Geng Placed Under Surveillance

An international conference started in Zhongguancun in Haidian District on May 25, 2023. On May 26, 2023, practitioners in the Haidian District including Ke Xingguo from Wanshou Road and Geng from Kinghuixili, were placed under surveillance.

7. [Chongqing] Mr. Li Liangduan Detained

Mr. Li Liangduan from Dazu District has been detained in Chongqing City for more than six months.

8. [Qingdao City, Shandong Province] Mr. Hu Yanfeng Arrested

Three officers from the Hongkongzhonglu Police Station went to Mr. Hu Yanfeng’s home on the afternoon of April 18, 2023. They ransacked his home and confiscated a computer, a printer, and over 60 Falun Gong books. They took Mr. Hu to the police station for interrogation. The police claimed that they found Mr. Hu’s fingerprint on the truth-clarifying materials they confiscated from another practitioner. Mr. Hu did not cooperate and was released the next evening.

9. [Xinbin County, Liaoning Province] Ms. Sui Yanping and Ms. Zhu Rongfang Arrested

Ms. Sui Yanping and Ms. Zhu Rongfang were arrested by officers from the Xinbin Town Police Station on May 19, 2023. Ms. Zhu was released later that day. Ms. Sui was placed under 15-day detention and was sent to the Fushun City Detention Center.

10. [Chishui City, Guizhou Province] Yang Yingheng Harassed

Yang Yingheng lives in Lianghuishui Village, Datong Town, Chishui City. Yang has been harassed constantly by officers from the town police station and the village officers including Jia Honggang, the village Party secretary. They often make harassing calls and come to Yang’s home. 

Officer Jia Wenjin from the Datong Town Police Station and village official Jia Honggang went to harass Yang on the afternoon of May 27, 2023. They pressured Yang to sign a guarantee statement.

11. [Luoyang City, Henan Province] Five Practitioners Arrested

Five practitioners including Ding Min were arrested by officers in the Yanshi District on the evening of May 16, 2023, during a group arrest. It is said that Ding Min was reported to police by a neighbor. Two people who did not practice and were visiting Ding Min were also arrested. The three practitioners and the two non-practitioners were placed under 15-day detention. The other two practitioners were released.

12. [Jiamusi City, Heilongjiang Province] Ms. Zhang Peihong Arrested

Ms. Zhang Peihong, 73, was reported to police for talking to people about Falun Gong and was arrested and taken to the Xinli Police Station on the afternoon of May 25, 2023. She was found to have 11 Falun Gong articles with her. Her home was ransacked. The police confiscated a desk calendar, a memory card, etc. Ms. Zhang was later released.

13. [Beijing] The Case Against Ms. Li Shuwei Submitted to the Court

Ms. Li Shuwei from Pinggu District, in her 70s, was contacted and told to go to the court on May 30, 2023.

Ms. Li was arrested by officers from the Yuyang Police Station at the end of July 2023. She was taken to the detention center the next day but was denied admission because she had a temperature. She was released on bail pending trial. 

Ms. Li was previously sentenced and detained in the Wuhan Prison for nearly eighteen months and was released on February 3, 2010. 

14. [Chongqing] Ms. Lu Yamin Arrested

Ms. Lu Yamin was placed under criminal arrest on May 25, 2023.

15. [Yongxiu County, Jiangxi Province] Ms. Zhan Youlian Sentenced to Three Years in Prison

Ms. Zhan Youlian, 69, was tried in the Yongxiu County Court on May 25, 2023. She was sentenced to three years in prison with a four-year probation, and was fined 5000 yuan. 

Ms. Zhan was arrested and detained in the Yongxiu County Detention House in March 2023. She was caught by the surveillance camera when she distributed information about Falun Gong to the county governor’s home at the end of 2022. Ms. Zhan was detained for two weeks.

16. [Tieling City, Liaoning Province] Ms. Wang Ying and Ms. Feng Arrested and Detained

Ms. Wang Ying and Ms. Feng were reported to police for distributing information about Falun Gong and were arrested by officers in the New District on the morning of May 10, 2023. They were detained for 15 days and fined 1000 yuan. They were released on May 25, 2023.

17. [Tianjin] Wang Weiwei Persecuted

Wang Weiwei was arrested and taken to the Beichen District Detention Center in February 2020 because the police found information about Falun Gong in Wang’s home. Wang was abused during detention, including being deprived of sleep, beatings, forced to work for long hours, force feeding and brainwashing. 

18. [Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province] Ms. Fan Jinqing Harassed

Two officers from the Qingbin Police Station in the Nangang District, accompanied by the head of the local resident committee and the landlord, went to Ms. Fan Jinqing’s home at 7 p.m. on May 22, 2023. They pressured Ms. Fan to sign the guarantee statement. Ms. Fan refused to cooperate. They stayed for over an hour and confiscated a photo of Falun Gong’s founder. They said they would keep coming back until she cooperated. 

19. [Yilan County, Heilongjiang Province] Ms. Dong Qinglan Persecuted

Ms. Dong Qinglan was arrested when she visited Ms. Zhang Lizhu on the morning of December 6, 2022, by several officers including Liu Zhanming, head of the Domestic Security Division. She was taken to the police station for interrogation. She did not cooperate and was released later that day.

Two officers including Liu Zhanming went to Ms. Dong’s home on the morning of May 15, 2023. They ransacked it and confiscated three Falun Gong books, a photo of Falun Gong’s founder, three old cell phones, and other items. Ms. Dong was taken to the police department for interrogation. The police forcefully held her hand to sign some documents they prepared. She was released that evening.

20. [Li County, Hebei Province] Ms. Cao Hongmei and Mr. Zhao Jiuzhou Persecuted

Ms. Cao Hongmei and her husband Mr. Zhao Jiuzhou were arrested at home by officers from the Chengguan Police Station on May 19, 2023. Mr. Zhao was sent to the Li County Detention House. Ms. Cao is held in the Baoding City Detention Center. 

Mr. Zhao Jiuzhou was severely beaten and injected with unknown substances after he was arrested in 2016, which caused him to have a mental collapse. He frequently became lost or beat his family members. His wife Ms. Cao Hongmei was under a lot of pressure. She sued the responsible persons including Wang Junchang, head of the Domestic Security Division, Liu Li and Wang Hui. The couple was arrested because Ms. Cao sued.

21. [Baotou City, Inner Mongolia] The Case Against Three Practitioners Submitted to the Procuratorate

The case against Wang Ying, Meng Lili and Zhang, was submitted to the Donghe District Procuratorate by the Donghe District Police Department on April 25, 2023. The three practitioners were placed under official arrest on April 28, 2025.

22. [Yinchuan City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region] Ding Gan Arrested

Ding Gan (gender unknown) sent a text message to the family at 11 a.m. on May 24, 2024 stating that he or she was in the Wenhua Street Police Station. The family went to the police station and learned that Ding was arrested and taken away by officers from the Qingtongxia City Police Department. The family made inquiries and were told that Ding was sent to the Wuzhong City Detention Center. The family has not been allowed to visit Ding.

23. [Fushun City, Liaoning Province] Ms. Wang Caiyun and Ms. Wang Guirong Arrested

Two practitioners from Xinfu District, Ms. Wang Caiyun, 76, and her sister Ms. Wang Guirong, 78, were reported to police for talking to people about Falun Gong. They were arrested by officers from the Wulaotunpai Police Station at noon on May 19, 2023. The police ransacked their homes and confiscated several Falun Gong books and a laptop. Ms. Wang Guirong was released at midnight. Ms. Wang Caiyun was taken to the detention house.
