(Minghui.org) After Minghui.org and New Tang Dynasty TV (NTDTV) reported on Ms. Zhang Xiaona and her family’s ordeal, her two children have been granted a low-income subsidy by the local village committee.
Ms. Zhang, 49, of Huludao City, Liaoning Province, was arrested on December 3, 2021, for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. She was sentenced to four years by the Lianshan District Court on May 30, 2022, and taken to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison in early October 2022.
Ms. Zhang’s imprisonment left her disabled husband, Mr. Chen Jie, and their two children in dire straits. Mr. Chen was shocked by a power line at work in 2020 and suffered severe injuries. The lower part of his left leg had to be amputated. He was not able to grip anything with his right hand and later became blind. With the family already in huge debt due to his medical expenses, he is struggling to pay for his children’s tuition—one in college and the other in high school.

To seek help, on September 4, 2022, Mr. Chen filed complaints against the three key perpetrators responsible for Ms. Zhang’s arrest, indictment, and sentencing: Wang Baomin, the director of Suizhong County Domestic Security Office; Zhang Xiaojin, a prosecutor with the Lianshan District Procuratorate; and Zhang Liang, a Lianshan District Court judge.
After his case was reported by Minghui and NTDTV, many kind-hearted people donated a total of 16,000 yuan to his family and also helped them file hundreds of complaints and letters of appeal.
On October 17, 2022, someone who claimed to be from the discipline commission called Mr. Chen to confirm that his complaint about director Wang had been received and that they had instructed the local government to look into it.
On November 14, the village officials visited Mr. Chen. They gave him 2,000 yuan and two tons of coal and took photos of it. When Mr. Chen asked them when his wife would be released, Zheng Dahai, the township director, said that, according to Ji Shengya, the secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee, as soon as Ms. Zhang wrote a statement to renounce Falun Gong, they would release her.
The village secretary and two officials from the Civil Affairs Bureau visited Mr. Chen on February 17, 2023, to get information about his family’s financial situation.
The villagers’ representatives agreed on February 20 to grant each of Ms. Zhang’s two children a 450-yuan low-income subsidy per month. Because Mr. Chen’s household registration was in Shandong Province, he had to apply for a low-income subsidy through the authorities in Shandong.
The exposure of the family’s ordeal also helped alleviate the persecution of local practitioners. After a practitioner in her 70s ran into a plainclothes officer in February 2023 as she was talking to people about Falun Gong, the police supervisor instructed the officer to release her instead of taking her into custody.
When NTDTV reported on Ms. Zhang’s case on February 1, 2023, human rights lawyer Wu Shaoping said in the interview, “No matter what excuse the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) uses to arrest Falun Gong practitioners, it is illegal. It has no legal basis whether it’s in China or internationally.
“His [Mr. Chen’s] wife Zhang Xiaona (was arrested) because of her personal beliefs. Did she harm the interests of others? Did she harm society? Did she pose a threat to the public? Or did she violate any rights of others? None of the above. Then why did the CCP arrest and sentence such an individual? Moreover, the CCP is very aware of her family situation.
“This family is miserable. The CCP targets the sole breadwinner in the family, who also needs to care for her disabled husband. It shows that the CCP is deliberately creating a human rights crisis. It is difficult to describe its evilness in words.
“[For Ms. Zhang’s husband], without any social security benefits or workers’ compensation benefits, once he loses the only family member who can take care of him, [losing] this kind of help, he may face death as a result, and his children are left with no one to care for them. Facing such a family, the CCP still slams her with a heavy prison sentence of four years. It tells us that, not only are those officials in the CCP system inhumane, but the judges, domestic security officers, and prosecutors are, too.”
Since Wang Baomin took office as the director of the Suizhong County Domestic Security Office in 2015, he has directly participated in the persecution of at least 30 practitioners. Among them, Mr. Di Yongchi was sentenced to seven years and died while serving time in Shenyang No.1 Prison. Mr. Zhang Jihong’s right leg became disabled from electric shocks while he was serving a three-year term in Jinzhou Prison.
