(Minghui.org) Seven residents of Suizhou City, Hubei Province were arrested between March and August 2023 for their shared faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
One Beaten During Arrest
Mr. Zhou Hongliang, who did odd jobs at a local mall, was arrested at work at around 4:00 p.m. on March 10, 2023. The five arresting officers from the Xicheng Police Station, only one of whom in uniform, took him home. After raiding his home, they ordered Mr. Zhou to go with them. He refused to comply and said he needed to care for his 80-year-old incapacitated mother. Four of the officers then whipped him with their belts.
Mr. Zhou ran out of his apartment building but the officers caught him in no time and continued to beat him. They didn’t stop even when his neighbors condemned the police for beating such a good person.
The police then brought Mr. Zhou back home and conducted a second-round search of his place. They also called in Xiong Zhiliang from the Xicheng Police Station. The six of them next took Mr. Zhou to the Suizhou City First Detention Center.
Six Arrested in One Day
Under the directive of Chai Pujun of the Suizhou City Police Department, the Zengdu District Domestic Security Office dispatched six groups of officers to raid six local practitioners’ homes at around 11 p.m. on August 3, 2023. Ms. He Zhuojun, 55, Ms. Gong Taiqing, around 60, Mr. Leng Shunchang, 57, Ms. Peng Huayun, 71, Mr. Wei Wu, 50, and Ms. Qi, were then arrested.
The police raided the homes of Ms. He, Mr. Leng, and Ms. Peng again the next day and confiscated even more items.
Ms. Peng went on a hunger strike in detention and subsequently suffered high blood pressure. Mr. Leng refused to answer any questions or sign any forms. His wife, Ms. Liu Yanhua, was deceived into going to the Xicheng Police Station on August 23 and arrested on the spot. Her siblings paid a bail bond and got her released after 9:00 p.m.
It is unclear where the practitioners are being detained or if any of them have been released at the time of writing.
