(Minghui.org) Ms. Wang Meihong, a 65-year-old geological engineer in Mudanjiang City, Heilongjiang Province, was arrested on March 31, 2020 for talking to people about Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999. She was sentenced to four years around early May 2021 and ordered to serve time at Heilongjiang Women’s Prison.
Ms. Wang’s loved ones have been denied family visits or phone calls with her. A prison guard recently called her husband and said she often screamed in the middle of the night. Her husband immediately suspected whether it was torture that resulted in her screams. The guard switched topic when he pressed to know more about his wife.
Many prisons in China intensify the persecution of jailed Falun Gong practitioners towards the end of year in order to meet the quota of transforming enough practitioners and receive bonuses. Ms. Wang’s husband suspected Heilongjiang Women’s Prison is doing the same.
According to insiders, Ms. Wang is currently held in solitary confinement, and she is highly likely to be in a dangerous situation as the prison often imposes more brutal tortures on practitioners in solitary confinement.
Ms. Wang once had chronic inflammatory breast tissue, hemorrhoids, and gynecological diseases. After she took up Falun Gong more than two decades ago, the lumps in her breasts and all her other illnesses disappeared. She became a kind person who never hesitated to help others and earned the respect of her family, neighbors and coworkers.
Ms. Wang’s father-in-law once gifted her and her husband Mr. Yu Zonghai, also a Falun Gong practitioner, two big albums of stamps in 1999, including many rare items and limited editions. The two collections were worth more than 500,000 yuan in total. At the time, a single house in their city only cost 10,000 yuan. Mr. Yu brought the stamps to work to have them appraised by a co-worker and they just disappeared. That co-worker was the only person who was shown the stamps and it just so happened that his wife was seriously ill at the time and the treatments were expensive.
After much contemplation, Mr. Yu asked Ms. Wang to not report it to the police, worried that this co-worker could be sentenced to up to 10 years—his family would be destroyed. As if it was nothing, Ms. Wang smiled, “Sure.” She never mentioned the stamps again.
Since the Chinese communist regime started to persecute Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Wang, Mr. Yu, and their daughter Ms. Yu Minghui have spent less than two years together. Mr. Yu was arrested in 2001 and sentenced to 15 years. Ms. Wang was arrested in 2003 and sentenced to 11 years.

As a teenager, Ms. Yu, now 35, struggled to grow up by herself. She once took the train by herself and travelled to two different prisons to visit her parents. After being admitted to Cambridge School of Visual & Performing Arts in the U.K. in 2010 to study fashion design, she moved to London and hasn’t been able to return to China since.
When her father was released in 2016, two years after her mother returned to the empty home, the couple applied for passports in order to travel to UK to visit Ms. Yu, only to be rejected by the police and told that there is no way for them to ever get their passports.
Ms. Wang was arrested again in March 2020 and sentenced to four years around early May 2021. Ms. Yu has been calling for her release, but to no avail.
