(Minghui.org) Ms. Liu Kaixin, a resident in Daxing’anling Prefecture, Heilongjiang Province, used to have a happy family. Her father, paternal grandmother, maternal grandfather and herself all practiced Falun Gong, a mind-body practice centered on Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance. The family lived in harmony and cared for each other.

But their happy life was shattered after the Chinese Communist Party began to persecute Falun Gong in July 1999.

Ms. Liu’s father, paternal grandmother, and maternal grandfather passed away one after another as a result of the persecution of their shared faith in Falun Gong. Now the young woman around 30 has become the latest victim of the persecution in her family. She is now serving a three-year prison term.

Father’s Death

The police arrested Ms. Liu’s father, Mr. Liu Feng, and ransacked their home on the evening of February 14, 2007, four days before the traditional Chinese New Year.

Mr. Liu Feng

Mr. Liu was taken to the Hanjiayuan Detention Center on February 16. Han Chao, an officer of the Hanjiayuan Police Department, beat him with a chair. The deputy police chief, Wang Yunlong, elbowed his neck hard. Other officers also joined the beating, in an attempt to force Mr. Liu to renounce Falun Gong.

Mr. Liu held a hunger strike to protest the persecution. He became emaciated and extremely weak. The guards then ordered two inmates to carry him to the hospital for force feeding.

One month later, Mr. Liu was given 1.5 years of forced labor. The police took him to the Suihua Forced Labor Camp on April 11, 2007 without informing his family. He was forced to work without pay and subjected to constant torture aimed at forcing him to give up Falun Gong.

After he was released in 2008, the police kept harassing him, and threatened to arrest him at any time if he continued to practice Falun Gong.

The harassment caused much mental distress to Mr. Liu. He fell from an utility pole during work one day and later died from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was in his 50s.

The Passing of Grandparents

Ms. Liu’s maternal grandfather, Mr. Meng Xiangbai, took up Falun Gong in 1998. He was deeply terrified and lived in fear after the persecution started. Four months after Mr. Liu was arrested, he suffered a stroke and remained in a coma for a month. He passed away on July 15, 2007.

Mr. Meng Xiangbai

Ms. Liu’s paternal grandmother, Ms. Liu Fengqin, used to struggle with many ailments and had to retire early. Similar to Mr. Meng, she also succumbed to mental distress from the persecution and was dealt a blow with her son’s arrest and labor camp detention. She passed away on March 21, 2012.

Ms. Liu’s Sentencing

Ms. Liu was introduced to Falun Gong in 1998 when she was still very young. She didn’t take up the practice seriously until 2015. After the pandemic suddenly broke out in 2020, she risked her life in distributing materials about Falun Gong, hoping for more people to understand the facts about the practice and enjoy the health benefits it could bring them.

She was reported to the police on March 18, 2020 and arrested two days later. Her Falun Gong books, photos of Falun Gong’s founder, computer, cellphone, and some cash were confiscated. Her mother was also taken to the police station and interrogated. The mother and daughter were released at around midnight.

Ms. Liu was interrogated again three weeks later. She refused to answer the police’s questions.

Zhou Benhua, director of the Domestic Security Office, arrested Ms. Liu on September 18, 2020 and detained her for seven days. The police continued to harass her from time to time afterwards.

While working out of town, Ms. Liu was arrested at her rental place at 11 p.m. on September 5, 2021, after the police located her through monitoring other practitioners’ phone calls. She was held at the Jagdachi District Detention Center and later sentenced to a three-year prison term by the Songling District Court. She was taken to the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison on June 16, 2022.

While still mourning the deaths of her husband, mother-in-law, and father, Ms. Liu’s mother struggles to cope with her daughter’s imprisonment.
