Guangdong Woman Sentenced to 4.5 Years for Talking to People about Falun Gong

Jan. 26, 2022 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Guangdong Province, China

(Minghui.org) A Jieyang City, Guangdong Province resident was sentenced to 4.5 years for her faith in Falun Gong in late 2020 and transferred to the Guangdong Province Women’s Prison in November 2021.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Lu Qiaoli was arrested on August 9, 2020, for talking to people about Falun Gong. The police ransacked her residence and the home where she worked as a housemaid. A copy of her Zhuan Falun, the main text of Falun Gong, was confiscated.

The Jiedong District Court sentenced Ms. Lu to four and half years in late 2020. She was transferred from the Jieyang City Detention Center to the prison in November 2021.

Since the second half of 2020, several practitioners in Jieyang have been sentenced for their faith. Mr. Huang Jianmin and his wife Peng Wenjian were sentenced to 4 and 3.5 years respectively in late 2020. Ms. Wu Yujuan, who works for the Jieyang Institute of Agricultural Sciences, was sentenced to 4.5 years on December 15, 2020.

Two more practitioners, Ms. Wang Yanjuan and Ms. Lin Liqing, were sentenced to three years and one month and two years, respectively. Although Ms. Wang has been released on medical parole due to a serious medical condition, the authorities refused to release Ms. Lin despite her cancer diagnosis while in custody.

Since 1999, the authorities in Jieyang have closely followed the 610 Office, an extralegal agency created specifically for the persecution, in targeting the practitioners. In addition to heavy terms, the practitioners often receive heavy fines – 10,000 yuan for every year sentenced. When Mr. Yang Zhuangkai and Ms. Xu Ruiping were sentenced in 2015, she was given five years and fined 50,000 yuan and he was given ten years and fined 100,000 yuan. As Jieyang has been struggling with poverty and the average household income was among the lowest regions in Guangdong, the heavy fines caused significant difficulties in the practitioners’ daily lives.
