(Minghui.org) A married couple in Jieyang City, Guangdong Province were sentenced to prison in late 2020 for their faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Peng Wenjian was taken to the Guangdong Province Women’s Prison in late 2020, and her husband, Mr. Huang Jianmin, to the Sihui Prison in April 2021.
The couple were arrested at home on September 11, 2019. Their Falun Gong books and some banknotes printed with information about Falun Gong were confiscated. (Due to strict information censorship in China, Falun Gong practitioners in China are using creative ways to spread the word about the persecution of their faith, including printing messages on banknotes.)
In an effort to collect more “evidence” to charge the couple, the police searched their home three more times between September 11 and 16. They even pried open the floor and ceiling to check whether items had been hidden.
During one home raid, the police found a receipt issued by the Supreme People’s Procuratorate and Supreme People’s Court in 2015, acknowledging Mr. Huang and Ms. Peng’s submission of a criminal complaint against Jiang Zemin, the former head of the communist regime who ordered the persecution in 1999. The receipt was then used as prosecution evidence against the couple.
The couple was transferred from the Rongcheng District Drug Rehab Center to the Jieyang City Detention Center on September 17, 2019. They were tried by the Rongcheng District Court at the detention center on July 27, 2020.
The judge sentenced Mr. Huang to four years and Ms. Peng to three and a half years in late 2020.
