(Minghui.org) A married couple in Shenmu City, Shaanxi Province, is facing prosecution for their faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Li Fanli and her husband Mr. Chen Guangchang were arrested at home on February 18, 2021. The police broke in and ransacked their place without a search warrant. In front of their 17-year-old daughter, the police handcuffed Ms. Li and carried her into the police car, and they also pushed Mr. Chen into the car.
After enduring a physical exam and interrogation, Mr. Chen was put in criminal detention and taken to the local detention center. Ms. Li was denied admission due to her health. The police confiscated her ID and put her on six months of house arrest.
For the next few weeks, Ms. Li tried to contact the police to seek her husband’s release. The police refused to answer her calls and blocked her from entering the police station. When she tried to file complaints against the police for violating legal procedures in arresting her and her husband, the police maintained that they handled the case properly. They threatened to arrest Ms. Li again and detain her at a mental hospital if she continued to challenge them.
Ms. Li was notified by the local Procuratorate on March 17 that the police had submitted her case to them and she was summoned to answer some questions. As Ms. Li had been experiencing swelling in her legs and other serious medical conditions, her family called the police and asked whether they could release Mr. Chen so he could take care of Ms. Li. The police rejected the request and blamed her family for trying to “blackmail” them.
At the same time, Mr. Chen’s two brothers traveled nearly 600 miles from Shandong Province to Shenmu to visit him, only to turned away by the police. The police revealed that Mr. Chen’s arrest has been approved, but his family has yet to receive any official notifications.
