The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) claimed that the self-immolation that took place at Tiananmen Square on January 23, 2001, was done by Falun Gong practitioners, but there were numerous loopholes in the videos shown on “Focus Report,” a program of its mouthpiece China Central Television (CCTV). Many Falun Gong practitioners have risked their lives to expose the self-immolation hoax. Lei Ming, a practitioner in Changchun City, Jilin Province, was one of them.

In March 2002, I was sent to Jilin Province Public Security Hospital after being arrested for practicing Falun Gong. While I was being examined there, I personally witnessed how Lei Ming had been cruelly tortured. He was beaten so badly by agents from Changchun Public Security Bureau that he had fractures all over his body and his eyeballs were the only body part that could move.

As we were lined up for color doppler imaging (ultrasound to check for blood flow), the doctor told the guards that Lei Ming could not be examined in such a condition. I saw him lying on a stretcher. There were bloodstains in and around his ears, nose, and mouth. His mouth could not close since his teeth were in such horrible shape. His eyelids would open for a moment, and then close again. One of the prisoners who carried the stretcher said that at night Lei Ming could not fall asleep at all.

On the fifth day that I was detained at Changyanggou Forced Labor Camp in Changchun, the “education team” (which was responsible for brainwashing practitioners) moved the most steadfast practitioners to different brigades to be tortured. In just a few minutes, painful cries and screams were heard from those brigades.

Gao Shilu, discipline section chief, was trained to persecute Falun Gong practitioners that were sent to him from the education team. He openly claimed, “Falun Gong practitioners should be treated like this.” He once remarked to prisoners, “How can we allow Falun Gong practitioners to become Buddhas, while we must remain here? We have to do our best to bring them down.”

Gao also remarked that “The most powerful person in the world is neither the UN Secretary nor the U.S. President, but instead Jiang Zemin (former CCP president), since the presidents of other nations need to seek approval from other government agencies before proceeding to do what they intend. Also, they are responsible for whatever wrongdoing they commit, even after they leave office. Jiang Zemin's power is above the law of the entire nation, and whatever he says goes. Nobody in the world can compare with the power that he has.”

When I was first taken to the labor camp, it was Gao who ordered the criminal prisoners to persecute me. If I didn't obey, they would punish me by forcing me to sit on a tiny plastic stool from 5 a.m. to 9 or 10 at night. They used criminals to monitor me; if I wasn't sitting up straight, they would hit me in the area of my kidneys. Yu Changjiang, the person in charge of prisoners, would beat me at night. If I didn't give in to their demands, they would take me to the correction office, where team leads and guards would beat me, put handcuffs on me, and shock me with electric batons.
