(Minghui.org) Mr. Jiang Hanquan, a farmer in Puning, Guangdong Province, was arrested for displaying couplets that mentioned the spiritual practice of Falun Dafa on the door of his own home.
Couplets are a particular type of short poem that have played a part in Chinese culture for over a thousand years. Written, painted, or even intricately carved in wood, they are displayed on the front doors of countless Chinese homes, particularly around the time of the New Year. The couplets offer frequently profound messages conveyed in a traditional form, with the hope to bring blessings in the coming year.
He Jiang was illegally detained at the Puning Detention Center and is now critically ill. He suffers from high blood pressure and other diseases that he developed during his incarceration.
His wife traveled to the city to appeal for his release at the police department, Procuratorate, and the Politics and Legal Affairs Committee. However, she was not allowed to meet with the authorities who oversee her husband's case.
Composing Poems to Share the Truth
Mr. Jiang was arrested on December 1, 2014, because the couplets he posted on his door praised Falun Dafa and Falun Dafa's principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.
One of Mr. Jiang's couplets read, “The Fa is hard to find, so treasure it/ Life is short but long enough for cultivation.” The banner on the top of the door read, “Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is Good.”
Another read, “The sky brings unpredictable wind and rain/ Man is born or dies in an instant.”
Mr. Jiang and his family have been persecuted for 15 years. At one point he was forced to leave home to avoid further harassment. His house was under surveillance for a long time, and anyone who came to visit him was arrested.
One visitor, a Falun Dafa practitioner in her 70s, was detained for 15 days in 2002. Another woman in her 70s was arrested in December 2004. She died a month later after being abused and threatened in the police station.
