The Public Security Bureau, Procuratorate, and the Shenbei area judiciary charged Ms. Wu with “breaking the law” to secretly sentence her to five years. Ms. Wu told them during her trial, “I did not break any law. It is you people who are violating the law.”

As a result of the persecution, Ms. Wu suffered very serious high blood pressure and had a heart attack, so the prisons refused to accept her. She is being held in the Shenyang City Detention Center, and the police will not let her family visit her. Her family is very concerned and worried about her safety, and family, friends and neighbors have appealed for her immediate release.

1. Hard-Working, Diligent, Kindhearted, and Respectful

Ms. Wu Limei, 42 years old, resides in Xinchengbao Village in the Xinchengzi District of Shenyang City. In June 1996, she started to practice Falun Gong. Practicing the principle of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance made her more healthy, diligent, and kind. She had a business in the early morning market, selling household supplies. She never sold counterfeit goods, as many vendors do. She has been very tolerant in dealing with others.

Ms. Wu’s mother-in-law said, “I have a very bad temper and a strong personality, but Limei never complained about me, and she has been very respectful of her elders. She has been nice to the elderly and the children. She taught her children to be tolerant and kind to others. That is why her children really listen to her, and never get into fights or curse anyone.” The whole village knows that Ms. Wu practices Falun Gong and her family has been happy.

Two years after the persecution of Falun Gong started, on July 31, 2001, Ms. Wu’s husband, Mr. Liang Zhihong, was arrested by the officers from the Xinchengzi Neighborhood Police Station and sentenced to six years in prison. For the next six years, Ms. Wu took care of their two children (a two-year-old and a seven-year-old) on her own. She had to take care of her mother-in-law and also work to make a living. She was also responsible for tending their seven-mu (a traditional measurement of land) of farmland. You can imagine how difficult that was. The neighbors said, “Ms. Wu Limei’s husband has not been home for six years, but she managed to keep her family and everything in order. She is really great, and we really admire Falun Dafa practitioners.”

2. Arrested and Secretly Sentenced

The police broke into Ms. Wu's home at 7:50 p.m. on June 7, 2012, and arrested her. They confiscated her computer and a large amount of personal property valued at 20,000 yuan. Ms. Wu’s husband and her 18-year-old son were also arrested and detained for the night. Duan Qingzhu, male, around 50, deputy team leader from the National Security Team in Shenbei New District, and Miao Zhengyu, male, around 40, the director of the Xingchengzi Village Police Substation, were the officials in charge at the arrest.

On October 18, 2012, the Shenbei New District Court put Ms. Wu Limei on trial. Her family was purposely not notified until the evening of October 17. As a result, they had no time to look for a lawyer to defend her. Ms. Wu had been very healthy after practicing Falun Gong for 18 years. Now, as a result of months of abuse, she has the symptoms of high blood pressure and has suffered a heart attack. She fainted in the courtroom several times, and two people had to hold her up.

The judge charged Ms. Wu with “interfering with law enforcement.” She replied, “I did not break any laws. It is you people who know the law and yet violate the law. Duan Qingzhu, the deputy team leader of the Shenbei New District National Security Team, wrote everything. They pressed my fingerprints on it. They didn't let me eat or go to the washroom.” The judge had nothing to say. Ms. Wu refused to answer any questions and therefore the proceedings ended in a rush.

Ms. Wu Limei was secretly sentenced to five years. The judges were Lu Guanghong and Xia Jingyuan.

3. It Is Legal to Practice Falun Gong, Those That Persecute It Should Be Held Responsible

Ms. Wu's family consulted legal experts and discovered that the Public Security Bureau, the Procuratorates and the courts use the No. 300th clause, “using a cult to interfere with law enforcement” to charge Falun Gong practitioners. However, Falun Gong is not a cult and practitioners are not breaking the law. As in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and the rest of the world, it is completely legal to practice Falun Gong in mainland China, and it is completely legal to download, print, and give out Falun Gong materials.

“Public Affairs Staff Regulations” Chapter 9, Item 54, states: “Public officials who execute obviously illegal orders shall be held responsible,” and Item No. 44 of the “Criminal Code” states: “Public Security Bureaus must issue warrants, Procuratorates may prosecute, and the court may issue a verdict based on the facts. They have to be held legally responsible if they purposely hide the truth.”

4. Appealing for Ms. Wu Limei's Release

Ms. Wu has now been detained for over half a year. Her two sons miss her day and night. Her husband and mother-in-law are worried about her health. When her family went to the Shenyang City Detention Center to visit her, they were turned away. Detention center officials said, “The verdict has not been issued yet, so you can't visit her.” When her family went to the police station to ask for her, the police avoided them.

The locals have been very sympathetic toward Ms. Wu. One neighbor said, “In the past, we did not know the truth and we were deceived by the Chinese Communist Party. We thought that whatever we heard on the TV, including the self-immolation and purported killings, was true. In fact they were staged by the CCP. After practicing Falun Gong, Ms. Wu Limei has been very law-abiding in running her business and has never done anything bad. Why would the police arrest her? They do not do anything right. The CCP really harms the Chinese people.” Her family, friends, and neighbors have appealed so that Ms. Wu Limei can re-unite with her family as soon as possible.
