Ms. Hu's dentures were confiscated while in detention. In June, she felt that something was stuck in her throat and requested a medical check-up, but it was denied. She lost weight rapidly and now weighs only around 35 kg. She could only take in liquid food provided by her daughter and thus became extremely weak. Her family members, who were very worried about her, went to the city police bureau and the city 610 Office to report on her situation. Her family requested that she be given a medical check-up and receive treatment, but their requests were also denied.
Ms. Hu was denied medical treatment for four months. Only when she was already in critical condition, on October 15, 2010, did the detention center taker her to the city's No. 2 Hospital for an examination. Ms. Hu was diagnosed with late-stage esophagus cancer, and the doctor requested that she be hospitalized. Ms. Hu had to pay all the medical expenses.
