On 14 February 2002, some 40 Western citizens - members of the Falun Gong - were arrested in Beijing on Tiananmen Square by the Chinese police at the outset of a demonstration to support the Falun Gong movement and its practitioners brutally persecuted by the Chinese Communist regime. On the occasion of the arrest, the Hon. Gianfranco Dell'Alba, MEP, (Italian radicals) and TRP member issued a declaration urging the immediate convocation of the EP Delegation dealing with China to address the question of the Falun Gong, its repression launched in 1999 and in particular the respect of Human Rights in China with a view of determining the EU position at the upcoming 58th session of the UN Commission on Human Rights.
